I encountered this problem recently after running Avg virus and spy ware programs. I did a sfc /scannow and eliminated the problem on a machine with Windows XP Pro

I ended up copying everything to disk - formatting the hard drive and switching to XP and it worked. The funny thing is I tried reloading 98 and even with the reformatted drive, it was a no-go, almost as if it just didn’t want to use 98 anymore.

One cannot expect a hard drive that is used daily to last more than three years. I replace mine every two years whether they need to be replaced or not.

You can't be serious. I've been using the same HD for 4 years now, and I havnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn........t-t-t-t-t h d ddd eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

"and I havnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn........t-t-t-t-t h d ddd eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

I can't decipher what that means.

However, I was referring to the hds that come with off-the-shelf junk computers with inferior hds such as Samsung, Maxtor, Hitachi, Western Digital, etc. They fail consistently. You always get what you pay for.

My expensive, Seagate Ultra 320 SCSIs are several years old.....don't even remember when I bought them but it seems like about 5 years now. :-)

Over the years I have had to replace many hds of customers' computers who had such inferior products.

Glad that so many folks know something about all this. These guys who make up these messages for your computer - always about an "illegal operation" or a "fatal flaw" - kinda amuse me. Like they're cops or some kind of tough guys.

I think they naturally assume everyone else is as geeky as they are and will automatically understand what is meant and what to do.
