Let's see: food and drink is $3,000 a year, rent is $11,00 a year for rent, $2,000 a year in utility bills and medical insurance $2,000 a year. Total lifetime cost = $100,000 lifetime. Beginning at age 18 and with an average male life expectancy of 75, that's how much it costs to keep one person alive the length of his natural lifespan. Of course in prison, one doesn't have to worry about what to eat or where to sleep. All your needs are provided for. No wonder Tookie's supporters are fighting so hard to keep him alive. Despite the absence of freedom on the outside, prison is the closest to pure socialism an American will ever encounter. Why would you give up such a sweet deal, if you're a con?
