Storm victims praise churches - want federal not local government to control rebuilding funds

Louisiana residents gave churches higher marks than government agencies in responding to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and most prefer that the federal government control rebuilding funds rather than local officials, according to a Louisiana State University study.

On a scale of one (not effective) to 10 (very effective), residents gave churches the highest mark of 8.1, and New Orleans city agencies and state agencies received the lowest rating of 4.6.

"Louisiana residents were not particularly charitable when it came to evaluating government response ... but were considerably more favorable of the efforts of faith-based organizations and nonprofits, including local community foundations and the Red Cross," according to the study.

Hundreds of churches and synagogues stepped up to help when municipal, state and federal governments faltered in their early responses to the devastation wrought by the hurricanes. They fed, clothed and sheltered survivors and raised more than $100 million to do so.

...... The majority of Louisianans, 54 percent, said the federal government should pick up the tab for rebuilding, and a 40 percent plurality said they trusted the federal government to have primary control over how funds are spent.

Only 23 percent said local governments should control the purse strings, and 27 percent favored the state as the watchdog.

My brother and his wife just got back from 3 weeks of helping out at the Mississippi coast. They worked out of a church. The government wasn't involved at all, nor the Red Cross.

The churches have been wonderful. I had 10 large trees down in my backyard. A team of Christian men affiliated with the Assembly of God Church who had come down from Michigan with a trailer filled with chain saws and other equipment spent an entire day in my back yard cutting trees and hauling them to the curbside. They didn't want a dime. Another church put me on a waiting list for the same service. They told me it might be as long as a three-month wait, but within a couple of weeks they called me to set up an appointment for that week. By then the other team had done the work so I thanked them and told them to go ahead to the next family who needed the help.

There were church parking lots full of relief supplies: food, water, bleach, toilet paper, anything you can think of that people might need. They were serving hot meals. They had trailers set up where people could take showers.

Oh, the churches also had medical tents set up where people could see doctors. The churches really rose to the occasion.

Such a shame the people don't think they can trust the people they've voted into local office. :(

The locals are directly accountable to the people...the feds are not as tied in to the neighborhoods. I wish the folks had trust in their OWN ability to make these local officials responsible.

Bush's fault! Thankfully!

The state and local government of Louisiana ought to be hauled off to prison.

With such corruption, it's hard to know how they were "elected."

the people most responsible for electing them are now gone and committing their crimes and drawing their welfare in other states. most will never return and good riddance. although immediately painful, this hurricane will turn out to be the best thing that happened to louisiana in a long time.

The only good reason I can think of for electing the incompetents/crooks is that they either have no opponents or the opponents are even worse. Where are all the good candidates is perhaps the better question.

That's great news, but not really a surprise to me. Before Thanksgiving, I returned from a church trip the MS coast. We gutted houses, tore down sheds, and cleaned up yards. It was very rewarding. We saw church groups all over the place doing the same work. The Red Cross and Salvation Army hand out hot meals and run shelters (VERY necessary work down there), but it was the churches that were doing the "dirty work."

I wonder where all the atheism-based organizations were during this time?

I didn't see any Muslim organizations, either. I suppose that doesn't mean they weren't there, but they weren't visible if they were.
