Recently released crime statistics show the homicide rate in California is 265 percent higher than the death rate suffered by U.S. and British military personnel in Iraq.

According to the report "Crime in California 2004," compiled by California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, there were 2,394 reported homicides in the Golden State last year. That compares with 905 deaths of coalition forces in Iraq, chiefly Americans and Brits, during the same time period.

A monthly average of 75 deaths of American and British forces has remained fairly constant over the last two years.

The peak for homicides in California was in 1993, when there were 4,095 reported.

Such comparisons have been made by defenders of the action in Iraq, who say the number of casualties for a war of this length are extraordinarily low.

Opponents of the war claim the lives of the 2,000 Americans who have died since the initial invasion have been lost in vain.

Opined Toula Foscolos in the French Le Magazine: "More than 2,000 Americans have left their lives [in Iraq], thanks to the conniving and self-serving ways of their dim-witted president."

I question the intelligence that led us into California in the first place. Had we known then what we know now, I would not supported us going in.

I'm all about staying in Iraq, but this is a dumb comparison: We have 130K troops in Iraq, and California has 33 Million citizens. 1K / 130K = .0077 * 33,000,000 = 253K. Until California has 253K murders in a year, you can't honestly compare the two.

firstly, we have 160k troops in Iraq right now. Secondly, you can compare the deaths in ways other than per capita, which is what you're doing. It puts the amount of deaths in perspective. California is not a war zone, btw.

I grew up in Stockton so I'd have to disagree with you on that one. :)

I grew up in Livermore and Santa Rosa...I suppose I could qualify it by saying it's not a war zone to the same degree as Iraq.

I still think its a useless comparison.

You're entitled to this opinion.

Yeah, but it's all the fault of guns. And therefore, Bush is to blame for that as well.

This is not the point. The point is that the individuals that complain, harp, and politicize the war in Iraq, do nothing to avoid the tragedy of murder in Los Angeles which is much more of a problem than Iraq will ever be. Iraq will go away the murder problem will not.

Why?

Our "Frozen-Face" here in California could care less about crime victims.
Reducing the body count in her home state would have no negative effect on Bush!

Gee, and I wonder who were the "dim-witted" presidents in France when France got her butt kicked in Algeria... and in French Indochina...?

And what was the body count?
I doubt that Toula what'sherface even has a clue.

Me, too. But, my wife likes it here. Grew up in this hell. Moved around the state as growth overran good towns.
I'm ready to plant my rear wherever people say "Hi!" and don't have a "pizza festival" to draw in tourists.
