"You could say in some ways we're going to have a virtual fence, because we're going to use a mix of technology and Border Patrol and infrastructure to create what is in effect a barrier to entry," Chertoff said. A "virtual fence"? That's not what not stopped illegal border incursions into Israel, it was a real one.

Wow, this guy's logic boggles the mind. Get ready folks, we're about to be screwed big time.

If Chertoff is not up to the job, he should resign and find somebody who is willing to do it.

and beyond which benefits only those paid.

A "virtual fence"I guess that would be really good at stopping virtual illegals, not to sure about real illegals.

The illegal aleins are a bigger threat to this country's economic and national security then Al Qaeda. As bad a 911 was it did not do much damage. A dozen city blocks gone and little under 3000 killed. More will die this month onthe roads from traffic accidents then that. Real damage was a hit but no where near as damaging as the economic damge that illegals do the the schools, hospitals and lowering wages in this country. And that is not to mention the people killed by illegals and by the importation of illegal drugs throught sive we use for a border. And on top of that how easy would it be for terrorists to come in to this country from Mexico. Secure the borders now.

It should be obvious to all that the powers that be in this country want cheap labor, at any cost (ironic, eh?)

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday that a temporary worker program for migrants who want jobs in the United States and stronger sanctions against employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers are critical to improved border security. Sorry Michael, but a temporary worker program is not critical to improved border security.
While we may need a new temporary worker program, many things must happen before that is ever implemented; starting with the 14th Amendment.

Sorry Michael, but a temporary worker program is not critical to improved border security. No doubt Chertoff knows that but he's being paid big bucks to act like a software program.

Is this guy for real? Talk about tortured reasoning...

They need to de-couple amnesty and enforcement.

"... it's going to be a smart fence, not a stupid fence"
What a magnificent use of Newspeak. "Stupid fence" = a fence, "Smart fence" = no fence at all
Chertoff misunderstands that the concept of a fence or wall is really very simple to most Americans - and we all understand how they work. Unfortunately, we also know how a "smart fence" works - or more aptly, doesn't work.
We don't need a cabinet department and billions of dollars to have defacto open borders. We can do that much more cost effectively. If Chertoff won't do his job, we'll just have to find another way.

I think we should be looking for a smart Homeland Security Secretary. Even if we found one, Bush would never appoint him. Bush only appoints parrots and puppets.

the government has "no other choice" but to develop a legal channel that will match willing migrants with U.S. employers in order to relieve the strain on the Border Patrol and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau. Migration of the willing bump!
