I just did some poking around on the prices of some of my 'loose change':
1942 proof Jefferson nickel = $1,675
1960 proof Lincoln cent = $550
1912 Liberty nickel = $2,400.
First time I'd looked into their actual value, I had no idea.

Many coins are issued as legal tender but never intended for circulation. Usually this is insured by the fact that they are minted of gold or silver valued way in excess of the face value. The American Gold and Silver Eagle series for example. The US also mints several coins of platinum every year, as does Canada, I believe.
