Wall will protect U.S. and Mexico
Cincinnati Post ^ | December 3, 2005 | James P. Pinkerton

[snip]

But Bush still clings to a "guest worker" provision, which puts a huge hole in that new wall. Why? Perhaps "W" is trying to court Hispanic voters, perhaps he is appealing to business, perhaps he is simply stubborn.

[snip]

The author's prediction:

A wall will get built with none of Bush's holes. It will be part physical barrier, part electronic surveillance, part get-serious law enforcement. And it will work, because while walls might not be politically correct, they are effective. Walls keep people and property secure, they keep nations secure.

[snip]

The forthcoming wall symbolizes our new realization that Mexicans should keep to their side, and we to ours.

[snip]

The larger point is that no nation can survive if its identity is indistinct. No politician, not even the famously proud and stubborn George W. Bush, can survive if he gets crosswise with nationalistic and patriotic common sense.

To hell with "political correctness". Bush should be listening to what America thinks, NOT what Mexico thinks. A wall might be the answer to the majority of the human invasion that we're facing with this President in the White House.

I agree with the idea of building a wall, but I am concerned that about the obvious contermeasure, digging tunnels. What keeps the enemy from simply building tunnels beneath a wall, especially in sparsely guarded areas?

The inhabitants of any country where the poverty level is that of Mexico that sits next to a prosperous nation like the United States will come in by any means possible in order to gain an economic advantage.

A country can secure its borders when the effort is made. Just think, if you can go to the moon, land on it, lift off and return to earth then building a security system along some 2000 miles of border shouldn't be that large of a challenge.

I wish.

But I fear that nothing will actually be done. There will be a little lip service paid off and on, Maybe a few more people will be deported... But I sincerely (and sadly) believe that the flood of illegal aliens will continue essentially unabated....

MAYBE the politicians will allow it to be cut by 5%.... 10% if we are really lucky.

I'm in such despair over this that I honesty believe that even if a complete army of Al Qaeda terrorists or the Aztlan Army of Re-Conquest come boldly across the border, guns a' blazing and raid El Paso, or Tucson or even San Diego, nothing significant will be done.

I'm sorry, but every other 1st world country that borders a 3rd world country has it's border sealed tighter than a bull's ass at fly season.

Why not us? Aren't a drug war and an unarmed invasion enough of a reason? Not to mention the terrorist threat.

Mexico says no fences, no walls!

"Building walls and fences is not the way to solve problems among neighbors," said de Icaza, whose two-day visit ended with a demonstration by the Utah Minuteman Project outside the Utah Capitol.

They will try and be successful in some cases. But tunnels are time consuming and will concentrate the crossings which means they will be easier to find and seal with a lot less people crossing illegaly than we now have with no major impediments. Using technology we now have such as manned aircraft, drones, space telescopes, etc we can map sections and analyist will be able to spot such attempts. JMO.

and don't forget Israel's wall in the West Bank

Good fences make good neighbors.

If we had will, we wouldn't even need a wall.

And not needing a wall would save us a whole lot of money.

The problem is with the government, not the means.

True.

I think that's what will occupy their time for all of next year. Lots of talk, a little action and maybe a law or two will be passed (but not funded).

But I sincerely (and sadly) believe that the flood of illegal aliens will continue essentially unabated....

I concur.

I don't know what to tell you. I figure I'll be dead before anything meaningful and/or effective takes place.

(Maybe you and I should have a pity party! LOL. Hang in there.)

A one half mile wide corridor filled with bouncing betty anti-personnel land mines would do quite nicely also.

Perhaps Jamie Gorelick should be consulted on this.
