Defense Secretary Joe Lieberman?

Will Sen. Joseph Lieberman be tapped next year to become Secretary of Defense as a reward for his support for the Iraq war?

That's the prediction from former New Republic magazine editor Andrew Sullivan, who told NBC's "Chris Matthews Show" on Sunday: "Before the next congressional elections, Joe Lieberman will be asked to be Secretary of Defense to succeed Don Rumsfeld."

"That's the back story behind Lieberman's amazing defense of the administration this week," Sullivan insisted.

Asked if he thought the Connecticut Democrat would accept the appointment, Sullivan said: "I don't know - it depends on how things are going in Iraq. But I think he's being lined up."

On Tuesday, Lieberman confounded war critics within his own party with a stunning editorial in the Wall Street Journal arguing that the Iraq war is being won.

"Progress is visible and practical," Lieberman wrote upon returning from his fourth trip to the war zone.

"People are working their way toward a functioning society and economy in the midst of a very brutal, inhumane, sustained terrorist war against the civilian population and the Iraqi and American military there to protect it," he explained.

Lieberman also endorsed the Bush administration contention that the Iraq war has made America safer, warning: "If the terrorists win, they will be emboldened to strike us directly again and to further undermine the growing stability and progress in the Middle East."

I applaud Lieberman for his support in the War on Terrorism, but I really don't think that Rummy is going anywhere.

I am one vet who has not forgotten Joe's participation, even if passive, in a calculated effort to toss out military ballots in election 2000. Hey Joe...how many of those disenfranchised military voters have now died or been injured in the WOT?

I hope not. This is not a symbolic post. Bush inherited a serious mess from clinton in the Pentagon and throughout the services. He needs someone in that post who is not afraid of offending the perfumed princes and clintonoids in the chain of command.

Lieberman is honest, but he has often shown that he lacks the courage of his convictions. He blasted clinton during the impeachment trial but then voted with all the other Democrats to exonerate him. He accepted the VP slot from algore and compromised all his principles before the campaign was over. He would never have the guts to stand up to the press and the establishment the way Rummy does.

Would love to see it if Rummy goes. But Sullivan hasbecome a silly ass and is an untrustworthy source. He's really just speculating, and will be snippy with anything to do with Republicans or the war.

Amyl nitrate has fried Sullivan's brain.

He might be asked by Rummy to be an assistant....but NOT to take Rummy's place....Bush wants Rummy right where he is....

Didn't Governor Schwarzenegger in CA recently appoint a Democrat to a key position?

I think that effectively ended Ahnolds career in politics.

I wouldn't put it past Bush to appoint Lieberman SOD, but it could be the final nail in the coffin for Bush's conservative support.

I like Lieberman, but putting a Democrat on staff would be another political SNAFU, and I'm sick to death of Republican/Bush political SNAFU's.

But, you know, Bush just might be that naive ...

Agree. Loserman struggles with his coincience alot, and his coincience always loses. If MoveOn.org wants to toss out abortion-luvin' Joe Loserman because he "only" votes their way 90% of the time, they should go for it. Reminds me of the liberal brits trying throw out ot Tony Blair because they didn't like his position on Iraq. Had they succeeded, the Tories would have taken over -- and their leader was FOR the war on Iraq PLUS he agreed with Bush on many more issues than Blair ever did.

I have noticed that Lieberman has been consistently good on the war, our GOP leadership in the Senate has not been as good as Lieberman, not even close.

Lieberman is a liberal. If Sullivan is correct this is a really, really bad sign.

How quickly we get that Joe was a good foot soldier to Al Bore and threw away most of his credibility parroting Bore's socialist line. This support of the war is a small positive step, but talking about giving him some big job is BS.

Sullivan needs to stick to topics related to his penis; that's all he's passionate about anyway.

No, you're not. Just because he's the most sane guy in a party of nut cases does not make him a good guy in my book.

"I am one vet who has not forgotten Joe's participation, even if passive, in a calculated effort to toss out military ballots in election 2000."

Darn tootin'! I'm a vet too and that's something I can't forgive Joe for. I think he may have even told algore he was wrong about it but algore wouldn't listen. But Joe never said a word about it, so you are correct...it was "passive acceptance" of the algore mantra.

We might as well get it thru our heads--the rats HATE the troops, always. They hate us for being volunteers, for any sacrifices, for promoting freedoms and for supporting America in peace and in wartime.

All the rats have left is their abject hatred for all that is right and good in America.

Sometimes Liberman seems to try too hard to get along with everyone. But I like him and have a lot of respect for him.
