Well, we are screwed. Given that congress is a democratic institution, and that reform needs support in both houses, the presidency and the supreme court, that is an aweful lot of hurdles to clear. Throw in a bitterly divided congress along party lines, how do you get the votes to move past the first part?
Term limiting needs to be a bi-partisan project, to be passed. And given that centralized government by *nature* needs professional politicians, who's going to support it in the White House? There's too many statists in both parties.
Best to be ruthless and pick off incumbants in party primaries when they, come up.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Because I have actually sent money into the party in the past, I am daily bombarded by mailing and phone calls asking for more.
The nightly phone calls got so bad that I now use the answering machine and caller ID to screen calls. When they do catch me, I simply tell them I will send more donations when the RNC remembers why people like me voted for them in the first place.
As for the mailings, I mail them back with the same message in writing.
After this last election I am so disgusted with the Republican Party's behavior, that I may sit out the next election or change to an independent if it doesn't get its act together.
"My Congressman stinks too. Typical country club Republican who's running for Governor here in WI next year."
Who is your congressman in WI?
I've heard good things about Pence, all the way here in California, but he needs to rachet up the profile, and I hope he does.
"I know a lot of republicans and not one single one is a "coward". Why doesn't Tony just shut up?"
Because he's writing about Congress, not your pals, and he's right. You would shut him up and suppress the truth because...because...it hurts to hear about the party you voted for? If you don't like reading the truth, get a !@#$ing pair of blinders to go with your RNC-supplied earplugs.
"and in the course of his article refers to the U.S. president who was probably more responsible for the rise of the Federal government as an uncontrollable institution than anyone save FDR."
What's that mean? You wish the South won the Civil War?
"Tell me about it! I'm from Ohio.
(DeWine, Taft, and Voinovich.)"
Sympathies, but at least DeWine has changed his tune lately.
What don't you like about him?
Don't forget LYING BAGS OF BS WHOSE SOLE REMAINING "PRINCIPLE" IS REELECTION.
If any of you agree with this even slightly, then do like I did and send a fax to your senators and representatives. Let them know that you want them to have backbone. Emails work, but sending them a hard copy seems to have a little more punch. ;)
"Emails work, but sending them a hard copy seems to have a little more punch. ;)"
Actually, a phone call is far better than either. Senators and Congressmen actually know approximately how many phone calls they have received on important issues---I've seen articles where they referenced the approximate number. Sometimes the conversation (with the staffer) also gives you some information.
The Federal government never could have become the bloated monstrosity is it today were it not for the foundation that was laid by Abharam Lincoln.
Even better.
He's not really from here, he's never had a real job (cept some BS company he made up prior to the election, he used smear tactics (untrue accusations), and outside money to attack the character and ethics of a lifelong resident, highly respected, 20 plus year sheriff, in the runoff election. He's basically a smarmy little snit wannabe with no upbringing. Not lookin out for the local folks at home, that's for sure.
I had family in the district and they were big supporters of him. I also have a few other connections to him.
No offense, but it soundslike sour grapes. Nothing you said sounds any different from a Dem talking about Bush beating Gore/Kerry.
Not sour Grapes. I have a congressman who is just a kid, never really had a job, nobody around her had ever heard of him, he lucked into a primary because the other candidates were all viable contenders. On the other hand, the guy he beat (barely) in the runoff has devoted his entire life to the betterment of this county and it's citizenry, and is a good solid married grandfather. I've known him and his family for many years, and they are the kind of people you want in public service. McHenry is just out of the dorm. And, if you would like to continue this discussion, don't compare me to Dems.
If your guy was a life long resident, elected sheriff, raised more money than McHenry, yadda yadda yadda, but got beat by a wet-behind the ears young guy, that means the campaign he ran sucked royally.
And that means the congressional office he would have run would also have been botched just as badly.
McHenry seems like the kind of guy who would be a mover and shaker within the congress. It's in your interest to have someone who doesn't require an afternoon nap representing you on the hill and someone who will stick around for a while and get some seniority.
Thanks, but no thanks. 'My guy' as you call him, is honest and trustworthy, McHenry 'aint. The character contest is not even close. And at my house, character counts.
His campaign was good, but McHenry brought in outside pac money and ran wall to wall negative commercials about trumped up charges that had no relationship to the truth at all. Huffman ran his own race, with his own money.
But it's all beside the point, he lost. You asked why I did not like McHenry, now you know. So take the name calling somewhere else. Sour Grapes.... bite me.
He holds many similar positions as I do. The other guy seemed to be a regular hack.
