My favorite show on cable news has been cancelled. MSNBCs Connected Coast-to-Coast political talk show with Monica Crowley and Ron Reagan has been disconnected. I was on the show several times, pleased with the fact that the hosts permitted guests enough time to complete their sentences. It provided a serious forum for the discussion of hard news. Crowley is a knowledgeable conservative who never gave any ground to her liberal co-host, the pleasant but usually smirking Ron Reagan.
Rita Cosbys Live & Direct program seems to represent the new direction of MSNBC. Her show was supposed to feature a story about a male brothel. That certainly got my attention, if only because it seemed to represent another new low in programming. No topic, no matter how sleazy, is out of bounds. On December 2, she was covering the issue of postal porn. Then she tackled the subject of two people apparently having sex in the front of a window inside a dorm at the University of Pennsylvania.
I was pleased, however, to discover that she was going to be doing some stories about World Wrestling Entertainment stars going to Afghanistan to entertain U.S. forces. So-called professional wrestling is fake but fun to watch. It will probably be a welcome break for our troops from the hunt for terrorists. Perhaps Cosby will return to the states with a new appreciation for the sacrifices being made in the war on terrorism and cover the issue on a regular basis.
Cosby got her show in the 9 p.m. EST time slot when Tucker Carlson was booted to 11 p.m. He actually advertised his later time period as being more hospitable to those who were drunk. I tuned in once last week, only to discover that he was still wasting valuable airtime bantering with liberal lesbian Rachel Maddow.
If MSNBC President Rick Kaplan wants to do a good conservative vs. liberal show, he ought to consider airing some solid, hard-hitting media criticism. The Fox News Watch program on Saturday nights has completely failed in that regard. Host Eric Burns opened one recent program by showing a fake People magazine with Burns on the cover as the sexiest man alive. Hes certainly not the most informed.
I didnt need to read any transcripts of the Chris Matthews MSNBC Hardball show to know whats hes been doing. Its a safe bet he was hyping some Bush-related scandal. The former Democratic congressional staffer does what he does bestmake Democrats into heroes and Republicans into villains. He may be predictable and boring, but at least hes not wasting time on hopeless missing person cases.
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, a former Congressman and author of a book about corruption in Washington, D.C., could provide a counterweight to Matthews. But hes still covering the Natalee Holloway case. Slowly but surely, he seems to be trying to move on to more serious matters.
Over at Fox News Channel (FNC), Greta Van Susteren started running sycophantic interviews with Hillary and Bill Clinton, and Shepard Smith and Geraldo tried to act like self-righteous heroes during the hurricane disaster.
And this is the conservative channel?
Van Susteren, a refugee from CNN, led the stampede to cover the Holloway case. This was seen as a smart move on her part because her ratings shot up. At best, of course, we are only talking about a couple million people watching these cable shows. The concept of expanding an audience by covering real news is apparently out of fashion.
The War on Christmas has been a major topic for FNC anchors John Gibson and Bill OReilly and its a legitimate issue. But liberals on the lookout for conservative hypocrisy charged that Fox News Christmas merchandise was being sold on the channels website as Holiday merchandise. OReilly had been highlighting those companies unwilling to highlight the Christ in Christmas.
In response, an OReilly Factor Holiday Ornament was quickly transformed into an OReilly Factor Christmas Ornament in the Fox News online store. But the real issue is why anybody would put something like this on a Christmas tree anyway. Can you imagine having an ornament on your Christmas tree with the OReilly Factor logo on it? Do people actually buy these things? Or give them away as gifts?
I dont know which is worsethe ACLUs War on Christmas, as noted by Gibson and OReilly, or making a commercial killing from the birth of Christ, as demonstrated in the Fox News Shop. One thing is certain: you wont find OReilly targeting his own employer for a boycott.
To make matters worse, FNC, which became the number one cable news channel because it appealed to political conservatives, aired a November program on global warming featuring liberal Democratic Party activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as a special correspondent. The airing of this one-sided show suggests that this network, too, has lost its sense of direction.
But if you think this is bad, wait until you read our forthcoming AIM Report on how a Saudi Prince has increased his financial stake in News Corporation, the parent of Fox News.
How do you think Bill OReilly will factor that?
Cliff Kincaid is Editor of the AIM Report.
Nancy must have had a fling with Truman Capote.
Oh so true. I can not believe this man (?) came from the loins of Ronald Reagan.
"My favorite show on cable news has been cancelled. MSNBCs Connected Coast-to-Coast political talk show with Monica Crowley and Ron Reagan has been disconnected"
Yes, Ron Reagan is a towering journalist who will be missed. /"The shouldn't be needed sarcasm tag"
If MSNBC would get rid of Chrissy, Reagan and everyone in between, they may get their rating up.
If CNN would just quit their ratings would go up.
Professional wrestling is fake?
Fox's media watch program has always been lame, since they don't critique, they just defend.
And they are very out of touch when talking about bias because there is NO bias, just political organizations with political operatives pretending to be journalists.
Nothing will change until the hacks who have run the "news" for 40 years are called out, and term limited.
In case you've forgotten, last year Monica Crowley's sister married Alan Colmes..
On an interesting note, Rita Cosby was in the WWE RAW crowd last night.
Cancelled immediately?..what's on there now?
MSNBC is the cable news employer of last resort. Who else would hire these pathetic slobs? Then again, if Rick Kaplan manages to land somewhere else, he can hire them.
More reasons why we need a conservative, news network... and fast.
Which is how it should be. Monica is too good to be on the tube with that dork. Hopefully, she'll land a good show. At the very least, she'll be away from that a-hole.
I got a glance at what passes for news on the boob tube over the Thanksgiving holiday and was surprised that something that was so bad to begin with could actually get much worse. That whole "news as entertainment" thing is just not working.
We know she didn't marry him for his looks, brains, or money, and he probably can't cook, so she did it to prove to us all that love is blind.
Wasn't Michael, the good son, adopted?
We visited the Reagan Library last month and it is a very beautiful place. Air Force One was amazing to walk through.
"MSNBC is the cable news employer of last resort."
Yes, just like a welfare program for homeless news readers.
Fate makes our relatives, etc etc
It's a good study that supports TS Eliot's quote (ht Thomas Sowell)
Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves. -- T. S. ELiot3
He apparently misses his "favorite show" because he "has been on it several times."
I missed that. Of course, Cliff Kincaid is no household word in the field of journalism. His writing over the years has mostly been of the kind that appears in those boxes that say, "Take One."
LOL! The first time I saw Rachel I thought she was a gay guy.
The most lucerative show on MSNBC is a radio program, Imus in the Morning.
Actually it's ALWAYS Plamegate even though that "scandal" has pretty much Fitzled out. Matthews, however, will NEVER let it go.
" Kinda makes you feel all warm inside."
Like babies do when they need a diaper change.
They give them as gifts to people they are pissed at.
More sad news, Nick and Jessica broke up.
Truman Capote ? !!! That's hilarious.
MSNBC should put Pat Buchanan back on the air. He's got a wonderful disposition, he's extremely knowledgeable and well read, and he's always thought provoking.
I don't always agree with Pat, but he's better than 95% of these talking heads, many of whom still end their sentences in prepositions.
That can't possibly be true. What are you some kind of Grinch?
Kinda makes you feel all warm inside.
Hanging Bill's balls on the tree? What's wrong with that?
$149.95 for a "No Spin Zone" Varsity Jacket. It's what all the hip kids want for Christmas this year.
I just heard on MSNBC that Brittney Spears had a baby and Brad Pitt and Angela Jolie is going to adopt the child then let Jennifer Aniston breast feed it.
Is that jacket at least leather? For that price it should be. BTW, why is O'Reilly shilling all these trinkets? What? He doesn't already make enough money?
And the fact that wrestling is fake upsets you with news like that?
Is wrestling fake?
As real as Dolly Parton is .
It just sucks the least.
I have just had a couple of bad months. Last month MSNBC said Santa wasn't real, there's no more Christmas, Jesus was a fraud and now wrestling is fake? I can't deal with this "truth" anymore. I still believe Dolly is real though.
"Fake, but Accurate."
She just needs to find a better venue. Certainly, radio is not her niche....IMO.
I'd take one Monica for all of the lefties on FNC. Ratner, Clift,Estscreech, et al.
Having heard Monica's sister on the radio for an hour, I can assure you, she and Colmes are perfectly matched.
Monic is hot, she deserves her own show, doesnt need uber-geek cohosting.
