For some, the military is an alternative to welfare. Less now that they're going in harm's way, but back in the 90s...

It's team work that makes an effective fighting force not a gang of individuals. This "Army of One" crap was as bad as "The Army Wants To Join You" ads of the 70s.

The Army needs to fire all of their Madison Avenue limp wrists and hire some old retired infantrymen to create their ads. Then you would see ads like: If you enjoy shootin', stabbin', kickin', hairpullin', eye gougin', ear bitin', and grenade chunkin', then come one in. We got a job for you.

The Army of One campaign was dreamed up by spoiled rotten. selfish, me first, public school educated liberal morons talking to their butt buddies through mass media.

With that said, the current crop of Soldiers and Marines protecting our sorry butts today are above and beyond Outstanding!!

Which leaves us only to surmise that the ad campaign was a complete failure and the recruiting goals were met in spite of it.




I do miss the days of "We Don't Promise You A Rose Garden".
It reeked of honesty and offered up a challenge.

A campaign of commercials should have airborne infantry soldiers jumping and kicking doors in. No catch phrases necessary. It worked at the recruiter's office for me, it will work now.

It was a stupid concept from the beginning. An army doesn't function as individuals; it functions from spirit, teamwork, and leadership. These things are not collectively individualist.

The first thing that happens in basic is that everyone's hair is cut the same, given the same unforms, and placed in the same environment that is intended to reduce the individualism so everyone can function as a team.

The "Army of One" concept was some ad-person's idea of an army counterpart to a long-distance runner or equivalent. This person was probably responsible some of the Nike commercials......

Army of One was always stupid. Who joins the army to be alone? I think folks want to be part of a winning team.

Agree 100%, although maybe this was an appeal to what was perceived as a self-centered generation. Maybe young people today aren't as self-centered as the "Self" magazine generation.

Right afyer high school, I went to an Army recruiter's office to ask about joining. I wanted to hear about driving tanks, shooting guns, wearing the uniform, etc. All the recruiter could talk about was money for college and learning computer skills. I actually tried to steer the conversation to the cool stuff, but the recruiter wouldn't budge. The final straw was when he pointed out that I would "only have to serve for 2 years" to get college money. He sold the Army like it was a prison sentence with a job training program. I split.

I always thought of that recruiter when I heard that awful "Army of One" crap.
