Taking aim at millions of uninsured motorists driving on California roads, state officials today unveiled an ambitious new program to provide affordable coverage to low-income drivers.

New policies will cover good drivers with state-approved auto insurance for less than $400 per year.

State Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi this morning announced a major expansion of the program that included offering it to communities beyond Los Angeles and San Francisco, where 22,000 driver took advantage of a pilot program.

If they can't afford the insurance, how come they can afford the gas and replacement tires?

In Phillly they have the right idea - no insurance, you get a ticket, or your car gets impounded.

I'm surprised to learn that you even still have private insurance in the Socialist Utopia of California. Surely the government can provide that service more efficiently and more equitably then the private sector. They should just raise your taxes and give everybody in California insurance for "free".

Illegal immigrants are not even allowed to be permitted to be working and living and driving on our roads that were paid by our taxes, in the first place, and now the citizens will have to pay just another added fee to keep them here?

Unbelievable…but it’s the assembly whose representation is dominated by marxists, whom are elected from districts in disproportionate numbers because by federal law the number of representatives is based upon the population, which counts -----illegal immigrants….

Seems like there is conflict of interest going on here, just more blood letting of Americana…

Wow, that gives me the warm-fuzzies that illegals are getting insurance for far cheaper than I am as a law-abiding citizen with no points on my record.

Can't say I'm shocked though. My own state government barely can serve its citizens and whines about perpetual funding problems. But somehow it then manages to have a special event on a Saturday on private property to help illegals get their Matricula card and sign up for every entitlement program they can get. /puke

From each according to his ability to each according to his need, comrade. Maybe now that throwing out communism is working in the former USSR, we can try it in the States.

My mom's car was totalled last year by someone. Well, I shouldn't jump to conclusions, because the person took off....but if I were to guess....it was in a "target rich environment"

And a friend I knew was killed six years ago by one drunk driving early one Christmas morning. I think he got two years.

Yep, they seem to be immune from punishment in certain situations. I was riding with a friend down a two-lane street at about midnight a few years ago. Our car was the only one I could see on the road. We saw a car pull out of a driveway a few blocks ahead and come straight at us in our lane. My friend tried to figure out what the driver was going to do, but when he tried to swerve at the last second, the other driver swerved as well and we hit nearly head-on.

Our car (a Civic, I think) was smashed pretty bad. The other car was Geo and was crushed even worse. The driver of the Geo (a Hispanic male) got out and ran back to the house he came out of. He left two poor little screaming girls in the wrecked car, one was a baby still in the tipped over carseat. Soon after this, one of his homies came out and started accusing my friend of causing the accident. He made up all sorts of lies, saying that we were speeding, etc. When the cops showed up, we found out that this dude was an illegal and had no insurance or license. Of course his friend tried to pin the blame on us when I'm sure he didn't see anything. Did he get arrested or in any kind of trouble? Nope. My friend had to eat all of the damages and buy a new car. The poor undocumented hard-working farmworker was held responsible for absolutely NOTHING and received no punishment that we ever heard of.

If we have all these programs in California so that low-income people can get insurance for $400 a yr....then why am I STILL required to carry insurance against "uninsured motorists"?

Another socialist scam!

UNINSURED motorist coverage here in Nevada is really high...Because of illegal intruder drivers and a 24/7 society drinking and gambling. I was shocked to see that my vehicle insurance went up over 12% when I moved here.

I don't think it is a matter of *can't* afford, more like don't want to afford. If you don't have any assets, there really is not much reason to carry a liability-only policy unless you just want to take responsibility for any damage you cause to others. That concept is kind of dated.
