I believe if you research this you will find that the Mooslimes had attacked several lifeguards recently (of course outnumbering them) sending one or two of them to the hospital in serious condition. And the Mooslimes wanted the evil western women off the beach because of their immodesty.

I saw some film of this today. Things did not look good. It seemed that the police who were trying to keep order were being attacked. It was pretty ugly looking. Hard to tell what is really going on with just short video segment though.

For anybody who's interested in a chronology, timblair.net has some information. He's a conservative Aussie blogger.

Short version: Muslim ("Lebanese" in local slang) gangs have been harassing people at that beach for weeks, calling the women "whores" and smacking around boyfriends, with no real police attempt to stop it. Then they attacked lifeguards. You do NOT screw around with the lifeguards on Aussie beaches. The Aussies decided to take back their beaches, and in the midst of that were some of the local yobs and morons who decided to take things four or five steps further and start attacking anything that looked Arab (including women) and attacking an ambulance with some injured people inside.

Meanwhile, the brave Muslim beach jihadis were in another part of town smashing car windshields.
