we are providing a service to the community as a whole by expanding the knowledge of the public.
Great idea in concept, but it sure sounds like it's a lot more effort than it is worth if you have to constantly "edit" it.
Too bad insulting alot of folks along the way is aprt of the strcuture,, until ya edit that part , it is.
Your comment about FR..
"The article is more or less fair. We are a conservative-leaning board; we do not tolerate Bush-bashing; and we, unfortunately, do have an ugly streak at times that shines through the more thoughtful posts."
is a bit suspect in my view tho.
using ugly streak and conservative-leaning don't really do justice to FR, imo. Could you re-edit that piece of your remarks for me? ;-)

It's not too bad to stay on top and edit articles. The task is relatively minor. Although there are about 870,000 articles in the Wikipedia, I focus on about 350 or so in my watchlist in which I am interested or which are sensitive subjects. Most editorial changes are minor; adding a sentence here, adjusting figures, changing punctuation, adding categories and so forth. I check the {diff} field in my watchlist, check the changes, and go on.
This is a geeky thing to do, but I work as an editor and it strengthens my skills to do so.

No, we DO have an ugly streak at times, and to point it out is only fair. I am uncomfortable with blanket denunciations of terrorists in Spain, blaming Muslims for ETA violence; the two are different groups. I think the recent comments on Harriet Myers, including calling her "a waste of a human being," were abusive and offend the oath I gave on my confirmation to treat all people with dignity. I have seen posts removed for really ugly material.
We are in a political fight for our nation and its soul. I don't like stooping down to the infantile and reducing the sound arguments of conservatism to sloganeering. I will call people out when I see it.

A ugly streak could apply to many other forums and web communities I have been to.
