Freeman Criticizes Black History Month

NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."

"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."

Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated _ when black history would become fundamental to American history.

Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.

"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.

Freeman received Oscar nominations for his roles in 1987's "Street Smart," 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy" and 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption." He finally won earlier this year for "Million Dollar Baby."

Silly, isn't it?

Wouldn't you say that having Black History Month, etc. continues the "seperate-but-equal" mentality that the so-called black leadership says it opposes?

This true American is an icon. He is a treasure that God bestowed on America, just as our Lord did with Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan. Not only is Morgan Freeman a great actor, but his narration in the film "The March Of the Penquins" is truly magnificent.

Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors in America. I happen to agree with him here too.

Freeman is a very, very talented actor. If I'm reading this piece correctly, however,he'd better watch what he says lest he wind up in the Bill Cosby PC Doghouse.

Thankyou, Mr. Freeman.

You have encapsulated my entire philosophy of history and race relations in a very powerful and succinct fashion.

You are a great American and I am proud to call you "one of my own."

I live near enough to your "stomping grounds" in Clarksdale, Mississippit, to have had ambitions of visiting your restraunt (particularly after the bit you did with Rachel Raye on Food Network). You have given me one more reason to go out of my way to accomplish that ambition.

I was very impressed when in the audio commentary on the "Glory" DVD he stated "There is no 'black history.' There's history, and we're part of it."

Freeman Criticizes Black History Month

I see nothing wrong with a black history month.

As long as we also have:

A Puerto Rican history month.
an Italian-American history month.
a Japanese-American history month.
a Chinese-American history month.
a Jewish-American history month.
a Mexican-American history month.
an Indian-American history month.
an American-Indian history month.
a Russian-American history month.
a Canadian-American history month.
a French-American history month.
an Arab-American history month.
an Irish-American history month.
a Jewish-American history month.

I forget, how many months are there?

Black history is American history.

True enough. But there is a school of thought among black radicals that attributes all American progress to the labor of black slaves. Hope Mr. Freeman is not one of its adherents.

I don't think so. I think it continues the mentality of victimhood and "we're special".

Any particular reason you left out the Uruguayan-American month?

My district is adjacent to Debbie's, so I get to see a lot of her. For a House freshman she's become quite the media whore...

Oh, yeah....on 2 or 3 nights a week, she and Kendrick Meek and Rep. Ryan will be on the House floor for at least an hour, maybe more...just rattling on and on about the war, and everything else they think that Bush is wrong about...

I, too, find it odd that a freshman representative would take such a high profile "position"...but, she is probably making everyone sick of listening to her...so maybe she won't get reelected..

I've had a lot of respect for hime for some time now. He always seems to have a bit of 'common sense' about him in interviews. I recall one interview where he stated that he lived and had his restaurant in MS because he ran across a lot less racism there than he did in NYC or LA.

My respect for Freeman declined when he narrated Effin' Kerry's 2004 Vietnam background.

Other than that he's a fine actor/person.
