What about my Alma Mater, Michigan, in the People's Republic of Ann Arbor?I wouldn't put MSU in the Conservative list
Ummm... MSU (Michigan State) is in East Lansing, Mich. The school in the People's Republic of Ann Arbor is University of Michigan...

Ahhh.... MTU. You guys are making me homesick, though I'm not a native yooper!
Great to meet some MTU alumni FReepers! MTU was a great school. I was out in '03. I had planned to stay there for my MSc, but funding was cut before I started. Now I'm going to school in AB, Canada. No need to discuss CND politics, for obvious reasons!! :-)
My sister just married one of my best friends from Tech. They both live in my old place near the Portage, downtown. I get a bit jealous to say the least.
More female eng. students would have been nice, but the materials eng wasn't terrible. Lots of girls at the U of A, however I can't manage to find any decent ones!!
I have some of my pics from Houghton on my profile if you guys are interested. What yr did you all graduate?

Is The Library still open? That was always my favorite watering hole when I got up there. But I haven't been up there (Houghton, not the UP) for at least 20 years.Yep, The Library is still there!

Stanford...when I met my wife she thought I was a communist.

You should see how freaked out Bay Area liberals get when I tell them that we had a student armory in the basement of each dorm hall.... :-)
I can only imagine! Were you there in the 60-70's? My dad said that the ROTC's had access to there guns at that time! The MTU firing range was great!

Is The Library still open? The Library burned down (!) in '95, and was rebuilt at the same location as a brew-pub in '97. Since I graduated in '92, I don't know what the new place is like.
They have a web site, but without pictures: The Library Brew Pub

I graduated in '92 (BS EE). I wasn't into guns at the time, so I don't remember the shooting range - but I certainly knew of the armory. (I lived across the hall from the dorm sherrif, who's job it was to give students access to their weapons.)
I'm a proud Pep Band Alum, too! Check out their website here!

The Library is much different now than when you were there. It had burnt down probably 7-8 years ago and they re-opened it as a micro brewery/restaurant.
Interesting story about how the original library burned down. And oddly enough, winter 2002 the restaurant 'Steamers' (owned by the same people as the library), burnt down when they were losing $$.
Its on the corner of Isle Royale and Lake St. The restaurant overlooks Ripley and the Portage. I had an apartment on the N side of downtown, between Soumi and the Library. Fresh hot pasties, and a growler of Rabbit Bay Brown!! Made for a great evening.

Thanks for the info - and you have some great pictures (that I swiped) on your homepage.
Just curious - have you skied Mt. Bohemia? Is it worth making a trip up there if in the region if you're used to skiing Lake Tahoe and sometimes Colorado?

Alright everyone, On three.....
In heaven there is no beer (No Beer?!);
That’s why we drink it here!
And when we’re gone from here;
Our friends will be drinking all our beer!
In Heaven there is no snow (No Snow?!)
Thats why we want to go
And when its ten below,
Our friends will be freezing in the snow!
In Heaven (Houghton) there is no sex (No sex?!)
Thats why we use Brand X,
And when we hit the decks,
Our friends will be having all our sex!
In Heaven there is no pot (No Pot?!)
Thats why we smoke a lot,
And when we die and rot,
Our friends will be smoking all our pot!!
It had to be posted ;-)

Bohemia has awesome terrain, even compared to 'out west'. If you get a lot of snow, it is great. The management there was a gong show to say the least, but if you make a trip back to the Keweenaw and can get up there I would.

"My niece, after spending 3 semesters at University of North Carolina - Greensboro shocked me at Thanksgiving with her calls for the DEATH of the President. Called himn a lair and a murderer."
Right then, someone should have slapped her snotty face, and her parents should have pulled her out of school.
Political opinions are one thing...but when someone shows that much vile disrespect, there should be consequences. At the very least, family members should have asked her to leave the table.

My daughter enters Patrick Henry College next fall. Wow! You must be so proud. I think that Patrick Henry aggressively pursues homeschoolers, and the student body includes a healthy percentage (if not a majority) of homeschoolers.
The SAT scores of their freshman class are level with those of the Ivy League. They've won debating contests against Oxford. All indications are that this is a top notch University.
I think they've focused on Law/Pre-Law, but I believe they're are expanding the School of Journalism, which can only be a good thing.

Probably because not enough people know where Houghton is. I think I drove though Houghton once. I remember the traffic signal.

Jims sells Soumi pasties, as well as Econo foods (I believe). Their breakfasts were incredible.

There is also apparently a new brewery in Houghton.
Keweenaw Brewing Co.
Their Pick Axe Blonde is pretty good.

the saner people I met while I was in the mad house of higher education.
