I hate to say it and thought that the following statement would even require second thought after 9/11 and increasing hostilities from the muslims worldwide since. But, I'm afraid it's gonna take another 9/11 like attack on US soil again to re-wake the morons up in this country.

Great to hear that Bush put Americans' safety ahead of the rights of terrorists!!

Clinton did the opposite....and the people love him.

This is not the same country into which I was born!

And as far as torture is concerned.....

If Senator McCains' family was in jeopardy, and some lowlife had valuable information, he would be first in line with jumper cables and a car battery!!

So if we get hit by one or more 911's who is going to get blamed. The Senators that voted against the Patriot act or the President.
Well we know who the US press will say is at fault...but I hope people remember.

It was the second policy reversal in as many days for the president...........

I would not consider it a policy reversal for the President so much as a policy reversal for all Americans.

Just hope some joker doesn't slip through, kill several thousand again, and the Democrats try to blame GWB for NOT doing enough.

I don't feel quite as safe w/o the Patriot Act. Could be in the minority in this, but I think most Americans feel the same.

Honestly folks, how many ordinary American rights have been violated as a result of the Patriot Act ? How many people's library borrowing habits have been spied upon ?

We ought to ask ourselves if the cost of having this act in place (i.e., greater surviellance) exceeds the benefits ( e.g. more potential terrorist cells busted and captured ).

I'm not entirely sure if this recent development is a good thing... haven't made up my mind one way or the other.

If Larry Craig voted against renewal , there is good reason for it . He's a true Constitutionalist and a watch dog of the Second Amendment . I suspect there are some serious privacy infringements in this bill if he is opposing it .

All I can say is this: Those who want to see the Patriot Act renewed are going to have to actually start using reason to back up their arguments, and actually deal rationally with the objections raised by their opponents, instead of just dismissing them. Otherwise, they will bear an equal share of the blame for the act's failure to be renewed. Flying monkeys need not apply (you know who you are).

It is all part of Johnny McCain's Al Qaeda Bill of Rights. We've definitely been too rough on the terrorists. You know. The panties on the head torture and all that jazz.

Since I am not an American, I wonder if someone can explain what tools does the Patriot Act offer to protect the state from terrorism, and how do others feel it is unconstitutional?

It has something to do with conducting surveillance without a warrant, correct? If that’s the case I don’t see how that is a big deal. Since most judges are liberals, what judge will allow the FBI to use surveillance outside or inside of mosques and/or CAIR functions?

So as of today, the Gorelick Wall between intelligence agencies is back up. Just how Clinton wanted it to avoid prosecution. How nice.

Wide open borders and a big hearty welcome wagon out for all illegal alien invaders, narco terrorists, chi coms and other assorted commies, islamo fascists walk ins, and a war on terror are incompatible unless of course you have another agenda...

imo

a surprising and dramatic rebuff to President Bush that reflected rising concern over his handling of the war on terrorism.

Oh spare me LA Times. This has nothing to do with "concern over his handling of the war on terrorism" which has been enormously successful. This is a Democratic party out to thwart the president at every turn no, in absolute knee-jerk obstructionism mode, aided and abetted by a few useful idiot Republicans who clearly don't even understand the Patriot Act as was obvious from their comments about it. Nerd Sununu, Nepotism Murkowski and Red Neck Craig made the country more vulnerable today, and based on little that's real. I expect that from the Traitorcrats. Not from supposedly good Republicans, including one like Murkowski that the GOP spent a hell of a lot of time and effort getting re-elected.

I love how the MSM always makes every thing Democrats do in opposing the president look like a principled stand based on "concern" and worry for the nation's well-being by people more enlightened than Bush on what needs to be done to win a war. The Democrats couldn't be less concerned for the nation's well-being than they are. The only thing they care about is ensuring they win elections by opposing the president at every turn. Why is it if Republicans opposed a Democratic president on anti-terrorism legislation they'd be labelled as "partisan" and "extreme" by the media, not to mention "right wing?"

No, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with "concern about how the war on terrorism is being conducted." The Patriot Act has been 100% successful in preventing further attacks on US soil. So where is the room for concern there if it's been a complete success? These idiots are only fighting against success--and ensuring we get struck again. Al Qaeda has got to be loving this development.
