Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a former San Francisco mayor, helped secure $3 million to tow the Iowa from Rhode Island to the Bay Area in 2001 in hopes of making touristy Fisherman’s Wharf its new home.

"If I was going to commit any kind of money in recognition of war, then it should be toward peace, given what our war is in Iraq right now," Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said.

San Francisco doesn’t want the battleship Iowa because it might attract the wrong (patriotic) element to its tourist-infested waterfront.

I wouldn't mind the Iowa coming to San Francisco.... ...if its guns were still active, it could pound the place in the manner that it deserves!

They can paint it pink and turn it into the world's largest floating bath house!

Well you partially answered my question. So 3 million has already been spent from a 'defense' fund (although a fiscal conservative could easily ask how pulling a 50 year old scrap heap from one coast to the next contributes to defense). Not only did California not pay for it, the federal government paid to drag it out there.

This has nothing to do with patriotism, well yes it does. It has to do with the fact that a patriot in the spirit of the Framers would be more concerned with how federal funds are being used (or may be used) than whether or not someone gets a fuzzy feeling inside over an old ship.

At least California should repay the 3 million and then not ask for one red cent for upkeep on this. Although they should pay fair market value for at least the cost for the weight in steel for the ship

Here's the link to the video.

I had right-click on 'download wmv'and lift-click on 'save target as' locally (scroll down a bit) and play it with windows media.

Hilarious but scary...

The Army Corp of Engineers will have to figure a way to move the ship inland to Fresno of course.

Heck, the San Joaquin River was navigable to Fresno by steamships before Millerton Dam backed her up. All we have to do is a massive release of Millerton dam and tow the Iowa on up. Would look great at Riverpark.
