U.S. sub may have toured Canadian Arctic zone

A U.S. nuclear submarine cruised through the Arctic Ocean last month -- probably passing through Canadian territorial waters -- but the federal government is refusing to say whether it gave permission for the voyage.
However, experts say it is highly unlikely Canada was even notified of the USS Charlotte's northern tour, which included a Nov. 10 stop at the North Pole, because it has no way of tracking what goes on beneath the Arctic ice.
And that could threaten Canada's claim to hundreds of thousands of square kilometres of the North, including the Northwest Passage route across the Arctic, said Michael Byers, who holds the Canada research chair in global politics and international law at the University of British Columbia.

This has always been going on. This goes to show you that Canada is not our ally of old if they start to question this naval practice thats been going on for decades. Its not going to stop anyhow the US Navy uses the North Pole extensivly. Sounds to me like the blind hatred of the US is starting to manifest more rapidly than expected in Canuckistan. If they feel like we are a threat in the North Pole then we might have some problems in the future.

If they were smart they would be glad our men are up there defending their candy rear ends.

We will always use the Northern Passage even if they had an offensive navy.

They sound a lot like the former leader of Germany when he was running for re-election a couple of years back. Canada, our new enemy.

OK HOLD ON RIGHT THERE! Where in the hell do they have any idea where this sub went? The only people who know where the sub is at any given time are on the sub, and they are all officers. Sounds like someone is making something up yet again...
anyways if this is true how are they gonna stop us? It's not like we're dropping SEAL's over the side and raising the American flag on a barren rock inside the Artic Circle...

It's been said that the Canadians purchased those 4 ex-RN diesel-electric subs precisely to monitor US submarine activity in the Canadian Arctic.

They don't. The current Liberal government is in an election campaign and trying to make hay by bashing the US. That's all this is.

BINGO! I don't think the Canadian gubment is questioning it..it's the Canuttian libnut media. And who owes THEM any explanations? They are trying to gin up anti-American anti-war groups...pure and simple.

"Our enforcement capability is embarrassing," he said. "[And] that sends a message to other countries that we aren't really serious about our sovereignty or about enforcing our laws in our own territory." How large is Canada's arm force? They rely 100% on the US to cover their behinds... then they complain about it later. US submarines tour the world a will. That is something that will NOT change. Just ask the old Soviet empire.

The Arctic Ocean is international waters no less than the Atlantic or Pacific. Canada doesn't -- can't -- "own" it.

Federalize the Civil Air Patrol and the Bozeman, MT VFW post and invade Canada. Close all of the Tim Horton's and declare all of the pine and fir trees to be endangered species. That'll teach 'em not to mess with the USofA.
