BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A Hezbollah militant sentenced to life in Germany for murdering a U.S. Navy diver during the 1985 hijacking of a U.S. jetliner has been freed, officials said.

The German government denied on Tuesday the release was related to the freeing of a German hostage in Iraq.

Mohammed Ali Hamadi was released Thursday and allowed to return to his native Lebanon on the next day, after qualifying for parole after 19 years in prison, said Ulrich Hermanski, spokesman for the North Rhine Wesphalia state justice ministry.

"There was no special treatment," Hermanski said in a telephone interview.

Victoria Tensing wrote this piece about the failure to get Hamadi extradited from Germany and the role of hostages in that failure:

Killers are usually released after 15-18 years imprisonment

Oh, good. At least they get the chance to get revenge on the people who put them in prison. Commit a murder at 20, out by 38, wipe out everyone who's annoyed you over the years, out again by 56 to enjoy your retirement years. Lovely.

Ship May Be Deployed to Persian Gulf

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A guided-missile destroyer named for a naval petty officer killed in a 1985 terrorist hijacking may soon assist in the war on terrorism.

The new commanding officer of the USS Stethem said Wednesday the ship may soon depart for the Persian Gulf.

The ship was named after Petty Officer Robert Dean Stethem, who was killed as he was planning to return home from Greece aboard TWA Flight 847. The flight was hijacked to Beirut, Lebanon, and Stethem was shot in the head, his body dumped on the tarmac.

How soon before this piece of excrement is plotting to kill Americans yet again? Heaven forbid we do any "spying" to try to prevent this though!

I remember that murder so well. It was heinous and brutal. We need to send our spooks in to get this animal.

Something like that. ;-) Seriously, after repeated murder it is possible to get life imprisonment for life ("Now we really really mean it!").

The germans have decided that their revenge for losing WWII is to breed islamic terrorists and send them abroad to kill Americans. Nazism by proxy.

Great stuff, with a very telling summary:

By caving in to the terrorists' demands in 1987, the Germans merely delayed making the tough call. We can only wish them well. Now they must display a strong national will and refuse to reduce Hamadi's sentence when the inevitable new demand from the terrorists arrives.

I'm not accusing them of collusion... but they just let a terrorist back into the general world population.. known terrorist = valid target... time for a surgical strike.

Well, we told your CIA that there are a few nice guys in Hamburg - they didn´t care. Hamburg, Paris, London, where´s the difference? Islamists as sleepers could have lived everywhere.

Oh, and yeah, life imprisonment means 15-18 years in Germany. For repeated murder, child abuse or armed robbery, the punishment can be life imprisonment for life (really really really).

The guy wasn't simply a common murderer. He was a terrorist, kidnapper, and torturer.

I sometimes wonder if making that wall come down was a mistake. Were you on east or west side?
