WASHINGTON — The Senate blocked oil drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge Wednesday, rejecting a measure that had been put into a must-pass defense spending bill in an attempt to garner wider support.
Drilling supporters fell four votes short of getting the required 60 votes to avoid a threatened filibuster of the defense measure over the oil drilling issue. Senate leaders were expected to withraw the legislation so it could be reworked without the refuge language. The vote was 56-44.

I heard that if the rats block the bill like they seem to have done, the Repulican leadership will hold another vote in which a simple majority (> 50) will win. I heard dingy Harry whining about this rule last night.

No- no one questions the validity of the fillibuster for ordinary legislation. The nuclear option's reasoning is that it doesn't apply to judicial nominations.
The Senate also blocked Katrina aid and anti-torture measures. These are good things.
Funny how the MSM will focus on one small part of the picture when it suits its purpose.

The filibuster is a vote taken to end debate and go to a vote. Frist can FORCE the 'Rats to "debate" until someone gives up.
