WASHINGTON — The Senate blocked oil drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge Wednesday, rejecting a measure that had been put into a must-pass defense spending bill in an attempt to garner wider support.

Drilling supporters fell four votes short of getting the required 60 votes to avoid a threatened filibuster of the defense measure over the oil drilling issue. Senate leaders were expected to withraw the legislation so it could be reworked without the refuge language. The vote was 56-44.

Why couldn't Senator Frist have insisted on a REAL fillibuster -- cots and all -- extending into January to see if the Democrats "cared" enough about this issue to stay the course?

IMHO, the Democrats would have quickly "folded". Hey...NOBODY gets between Ted Kennedy and his "egg-nog".

I think that someone should tell Senator Frist that surrendering to the mere THREAT of a fillibuster just ensures that these partisan (cost-free) tantrums will continue.

I certainly hope that Senator Frist hands over his Majority Leader keys to a less timid Republican, who would understand that the words, "majority" and "leader" actually MEAN something.

Tall about an irrelevent post! It's not about my feelings it's about your inability to understand sarcasm. I'm not suggesting people not contact Frist I'm just illustrating what his reaction is likely to be. But who knows maybe someday I'll grow up and become a terrorist fighter like you.

Naught Democrats no Christmas break for you

I don't think they were planning a Christmas break anyway. A holiday break, yes, and likely they'll have one before the issue is brought up again.

The filibuster is a vote taken to end debate and go to a vote. Frist can FORCE the 'Rats to "debate" until someone gives up.

That's a *cloture" vote, which is supposed to end a filibuster. A filibuster is extending debate, by holding the floor. Only thing is, the Republicans no longer force the Dems to actually hold the floor, all the Dems need do is threaten to actually filibuster. Like you, I say make 'em talk. I'd love to see fat Teddy and the Grand Kleagle up there flapping their gums on Christmas day. Of course all the Republicans would need to be in attendance as well, lest the Dems "call the question" and vote the bill down while the Republicans are AWOL.
