Sides Try to Prevent London Subway Strike

LONDON -- Union leaders representing London Underground workers said Thursday they will hold talks with managers aimed at preventing a crippling New Year's Eve strike on the city's subway system.

The negotiations will take place at arbitration service ACAS on Friday in the hope of avoiding a planned 24-hour walkout from noon Dec. 31.

Members of the RMT transport union announced the action, and another 24-hour walkout on Jan. 8-9, after members voted by more than five to one for industrial action in a dispute about hours and staffing levels.

The action would paralyze the capital's underground network and cause chaos for hundreds of thousands of New Year's Eve partygoers, who take advantage of free services between 2345 GMT and 0430 GMT. Following the announcement of talks, RMT general secretary Bob Crow told reporters Thursday night: "We have been seeking talks with LU for weeks and we welcome this opportunity to meet them."

I wonder if the benefits package of the London Underground Union is comparable?
