Allentown, PA -- A lovelorn woman or man dropped a diamond engagement ring valued at $750 to $1,000 into one of the Salvation Army's signature kettles outside a convenience store along with a note: "This ring did not bring me luck, but hopefully it will for someone else. Merry Christmas."

Seems interesting, but I refuse to give either the LA or NY Times any hits.
registration....bleagh!
I went to Drudge>LA times> search for "salvation army" and got the story...
::singing:: "This diamond ring doesn't shine for me, anymore..."
I heard this same story on a TV show a few days ago but it was that someone left their car door unlocked thus they were lucky to have found the ring (hmmm...the same one?) had been left on their car seat with the exact same note.
I smell an urban myth.
If that diamond ring don't shine
Salvation Army says that's fine.
The original story was legit and in Mass. This is either a copycat or outright fraud.
Seems to me that I read this "story" in a newspaper back in the days of wood pulp media. It's either a copycat incident or an old urban myth.
