Sheesh...what were they expecting in Dallas, Santa Ana to return? When was that house built?

Glad you saw this. The battles of the War for Independence that took place in the South get shortchanged. And no, it's not because of any Yankee prejudice. They do not get the ink for the same reason that many battles in the North are relatively ignored: General Washington was not there. The ones he took part in (Brooklyn, Harlem Heights, Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth) are--in general--better studied than the ones fought without him.
One that the General DID take part in in the South was, of course, Yorktown.

Thank you for your kind words. It's sentiments like yours that keep me looking for stories about early American history in order to share them with people who care about how we got here.

No. All the prisoners were rounded up and shot due to the lack of a place to put them and not enough food to feed them over the winter.
This is a classic example of why you NEVER tell a Celtic/Scotch/Irish hillbilly that you are going to kick his butt. Once that happens, the hunter becomes the hunted.

When was that house built? It was built in 1939. The thick walls were to provide thermal insulation - remember, he was a physicist. It gets mighty warm in Dallas in the summertime.
His name was Everett L. DeGolyer. While the property was originally called Rancho Encinal, it is frequently referred to as the DeGolyer Estate.

You're welcome. There are times when I'm not around much, but I, for one, truly appreciate your efforts.
The only downside (not really a downside except for lack of time) to this ping list is that, thanks to Scott and others, my required reading list is rapidly becoming unmanageable.
For anyone who's interested, my husband got a book for Christmas entitled "The Constitution: a Biography". I promptly sto... er, borrowed it. The title sounds suspiciously "living document-ish", but I'll report back.

Did those on the losing side survive? The way I heard it, the losers in the Carolinas -- my relatives included -- were dispossessed and took off for the sugar colonies; Jamaica, Barbados, Bahamas etc., voluntarily or otherwise.

Cowpens National battleground is about 18 miles south on Kings Mountain, down I-85. Another battle of importance took place here. Not as nice as KM but still very informative. I really like the Scruggs house on display there. Good links at http://jrshelby.com/kimocowp/cp.htm

Sounds like we could do that in one day with Kings Mountain, if we got an early start.
