Petition to end the nonprofit status of the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation
thepetitionsite.com ^ | 12/7/2005 | Sam Black

Posted on 12/29/2005 9:08:55 AM PST by Brilliant

Despite its deceptively pro-American image, The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation(ACLU-F) has helped represent terrorists and foreign nationals -- including those jailed for treason, international terrorism, and even attempted murder. On several occasions the ACLU-F has acted beyond the scope of its mission statement by helping in representing foreign nationals abroad against the United States of America. And since the passage of the Patriot Act, rank-and-file ACLU activists have been arrested during anti-war protests, and anti-government rallies.

Like millions of other nonprofit groups in the United States (e.g., universities, houses of worship, social service organizations), the ACLU Foundation pays no federal taxes on its income. But few of these other tax-exempt groups share total disregard for the law. Because these tax breaks amounts to a huge subsidy, every American taxpayer is footing the bill for ACLU-F behavior, and litigation against our very government, and thus it increases our taxes to defend our country against their many lawsuits. Moreover, in the past they have been less than forth-coming with the required public documentation.

The American Civil Liberties Foundation tax-exempt status was granted by the U.S. government on the basis of the group's willingness to conduct itself in a lawful fashion. We believe that the ACLU-F has failed to live up to its end of the bargain, and that the Internal Revenue Service should cancel it's tax-exempt status.

If you agree, please add your name and contact information below. Your "signature" -- along with those of thousands of other Americans -- will be used to encourage U.S. government officials to take action. The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation should be investigated by the IRS for accepting donations from prohibited parties pursuant to the most recent laws, so this is the perfect time to make your opinion known.

I, the undersigned, urge the United States Treasury Department to cancel the tax-exempt status currently extended to the American Civil Liberties Association Foundations and its affiliated organizations under Section 501(c) of the U.S. Treasury Code.

By repeatedly and continuously giving financial support to individuals and organizations devoted to terrorism, by continuing to file actions against our government in the effort against foreign and domestic terrorists, the ACLU-F, has demonstrated that it is incapable of conducting itself in a manner expected of nonprofit groups receiving federal tax subsidies. ACLU-F should not enjoy tax-exempt status similar to that of universities, houses of worship, and legitimate social service and educational organizations.

"Does anyone know if the ACLU is the recipient of federal government grant money??"

The ACLU has it even better than that. There is a law on the books that allows for "recovery" of costs for "public interest" lawsuits. Believe it or not your Federal Government PAYS activist groups like the ACLU to sue it. This funding of the hard-line communist left masquerades as "legal assistance to the poor." That's right Virginia, you and me are paying for the ACLU's vicious assault on America.

And where are the politicians on this? Even the Republicans are too cowed by the MSM to correct this travesty.

Not to be negative but online petitions dont do anything except bring hits to the website that provides the futile service. Genius on the petition service's part though.

I looked at the 990 for the ACLU Foundation of NJ, and they claim $0 for "Government contributions (grants)".

They also claim investment income, and are supposed to declare what they're invested in, but didn't in '04, the only year I looked. They also filed a 3-month extension though, so may have at that time.

Online petitions are worth zip. However, I'm sorely tempted to sign this one--except it's worth zip.

I'd love to see the ACLU taken down a few notches but I didn't read anything in your post that would constitute a violation of their C-3 status...unfortunately.

The best way to attack them may be defunding them...look at their contributors, go after the corporations and foundations.

It's not so much grant money that this relates to as it is the question of whether you get a tax deduction by making a contribution to the organization. The ACLU Foundation is tax deductible, but can't engage in lobbying. The main ACLU entity is not tax deductible but can engage in lobbying.

I don't think either organization should be tax deductible.

We could pass a law denying them the tax exempt status. I don't think this guy was trying to argue in his petition that they don't qualify for tax exempt status. He's simply saying they should not be permitted to qualify for tax exempt status.

Who are the ACLU's contributors?

Progressive Insurance Company?

Ford Motor Company?

Can someone please post an accurate BOYCOTT List of ACLU collaberators and enablers.

The ACLU has done well to maintain this image over the years and I often wonder how they manage to pull it off. A group offering legal assistance to the poor is a good group...but I have not seen the ACLU off championing the poor lately. Aside from religion and gay rights...do they stand for anything at all any longer?

That may be pretty hard to argue in court.

There's the ACLU and the ACLU Foundation. I think that's their way to get around the tax law on tax-exempt status.

It's worse than that. The ACLU sues the government and then is paid by the taxpayers!

"do they stand for anything at all any longer?"

Of course they stand for something. They stand for the imposition of Marxism on America.
