BAGHDAD, Iraq — Excerpts from an essay written recently by Farris Hassan, 16, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who traveled to Iraq without telling his parents:

There is a struggle in Iraq between good and evil, between those striving for freedom and liberty and those striving for death and destruction. You are aware of the heinous acts of the terrorists: Women and children massacred, innocent aid workers decapitated, indiscriminate murder. You are also aware of the heroic aspirations of the Iraqi people: liberty, democracy, security, normality. Those terrorists are not human but pure evil. For their goals to be thwarted, decent individuals must answer justice's call for help ... So I will.

Life is not about money, fame, or power. Life is about combating the forces of evil in the world, promoting justice, helping the misfortunate, and improving the welfare of our fellow man. Progress requires that we commit ourselves to such goals. We are not here on Earth to hedonistically pleasure ourselves, but to serve each other and the creator. What deed is greater than sacrificing one's luxuries for the benefit of those less blessed? ...

This story has been posted on MSNBC but in their article they paint this 16 year old to be a kook and naive. They miss his eloquence. It is must read for all Americans, esp for those who have come to this country from other countries to experience the good life.

I am very impressed by this young man's ability to write and put into words what should be in the hearts and minds of all of us.

I noted the same thing... CNN also has their version of his adventure. They don't mention that he is a member of the republican student group.

My nephew in Texas went to the only inter-political student group at this school. He and his friend were the only republicans. Most of the student claimed to be socialists and democrats...

Let's wait until they have to pay taxes to breathe.

Naive, probably so. He could have been a target for kidnapping or killing in a heartbeat. Insensitive as well; his actions made his parents frantic. On the other hand, he appears to know right from wrong and was willing to back up his beliefs with action. I've got to respect that!

His essay should be required reading for all teenagers.

NOT so naive - he KNEW what could happen to him - BUT, he took a chance anyway. What a kid!!! Wow! His parents sure are raising him right! And, boy, can HE write! What an amazing story. This kid is SOMETHING!

If he had come back bashing the war effort, I'm sure they'd be praising him as a mature young man who will go far in this world.
