The newly refurbished office space on the sixth floor of the State Capitol

Not a change these offices received any flooding.

COME ON DOWN!
Here's what I know as a Louisianian and a New Orleanian.
-MawMaw Blanko is a mouthpiece for the Edwards crowd. She was elected to 'hold the place', and to prevent a brown 'foreigner'( Jindal-yes- it's about race!) from becoming Governor.
-As I speak, people I consider well educated and more than half-intelligent actually BELIEVE Edwin Edwards should be Governor again, and would vote for him again!
-MawMaw Blanko is not running the Governors office, her husband is. Both are incompetent, but she is now doing what she is best at- shopping and redecorating.

You must understand- a BIG portion of this state NEVER EXPECTED anything more from her. And, a big portion of this state HATES, HATES, HATES South Louisiana and New Orleans in particular; so they do NOT count her handling of Katrina against her.
A huge number of Louisianians would vote for a blind, deaf, mentally retarded DEAD candidate before Bobby Jindal- because he's Republican, and because he's a brown 'foreigner'. Thems the FACTS as me and mine know them.

To expect the deep seated mentality of Louisiana and New Orleans to change because of Katrina and it's aftermath is fantasy. The state is divided, the parishes are divided, the cities are divided along class, race and political lines. Right now the fighting is heating up over trailers( NIMBY) and Levee Boards(we don't trust YOUR'S, only OURS) being consolidated.
Nagin wouldn't even meet a group of his own citizens from Lakeview because they had to meet ONE BLOCK OVER the parish line in Jefferson Parish! The only parish above water!
Most of you have no idea of the level of factionalism here. NOTHING is getting done. Most of N.O. still looks like the day after Katrina.
So- come on down--SOMEBODY should either straighten this mess out and drag this area into the 21st century, or write it off and start shutting it down.
The biggest fear in government here is not that the levees won't be fixed, it's that New Orleans might become a 'white city'. That is considered the worst that could happen!
Too white, too crime-free, to bucolic, too mid-america, too...what exactly? That is actually said, in public, by officials and it has been in print!
New Orleans can't become a 'white city'.
Ruminate on that!

"Blocked Bush from allowing it to be federalized so their would be one cohesive chain of command under general honore. "

She was right to do that, for the simple reason that no governor should ever willing allow their national guard to be federalized, flies against everything that proper Southern governance tells you to do.

The correct course of action there would have been for the federal government to send in troops, and allow the Commander-In-Chief of Louisiana (even if she's incompetent, she is Commander-In-Chief of her state's militia, both organized and unorganized) control of the troops.

On everything else though, you're right on target, and it's not as if she got elected because people wanted her in office, she got elected because some people in north Louisiana voted against her opponent for something he had no control over.

This is a crock...in Louisiana, unless the change is precipitated by a life threatenting event (e.g. lack of sprinklers - not true, the capitol is sprinklered), there is no requirement for private sector, much less governmental, entities to up-grade to code unless there is damage to or a renovation of an existing property that is in excess of 50% of the value of the property.

She or Nagin one declined Amtrack's offer of train space for evacuees when they were moving their trains out of the hurricane path.

First of all, she did an awful job with the hurricane. Now as for the remodeling the question I have is would any other Governor remodel his or her office after a hurricane when you still have to run the state? Yes. If this had been Jeb Bush or any other governor, this would not be a story. I mean had the White House been under a hurricane wouldn't we be wanting the White House rebuilt as soon as possible. See, I look at this as a win for Republicans because she is going to be voted out next election and the Republican who moves in there has a new state of the art governor building.

All she has to do is name the floor "Ninth Ward Dike". That should take care of the funding.

Wrong! Everything has illustrated what a lousy CIC Blanco has been, and the shear incompetence of her staff.

She was late for everything, and often didn't act until prompted repeatedly.

Calling for evacuations: Late

Calling up Louisiana Guard: Late

Requesting assistance from other state Guards: Late

Requesting assistance from the federal government (Other than fiscal): Late

It wasn't until President Bush arrived on Friday, and basically gave Blanco 24 hours to straighten things out, did things start working.

I didn't defend Blanco. All I was saying is, no governor should ever willing submit there state's national guard to federalization, that's based on a principle of state's rights.

In disasters such as this, the feds should always defer to the course of action preferred by the leadership of the state in question, that's what happened in AL and MS, and everything went ok here (ok is very much a relative term)

Blanco is incompetent and a bad executive, people familiar with the coast knew this long before Katrina, but that being said, it makes no sense to create a dangerous precedent for federal intervention just because this one time, the governor was a moron, because next time, the governor might be a genious.

I hear you, brother.

I'm from New Jersey. But Louisiana makes our corruption look like amateur night.

Thank you for the in depth report on the political landscape--we would never get that kind of information from the MSM.

Except, that it is all Bush's fault.

State Capitol Could Get Massive Facelift

Pat Kessler
Reporting

Save It Email It Print It
(WCCO) St. Paul The end of 2005 marks the end of the State Capitol's year-long 100th birthday party. And when the party's over, state leaders want to start working on fixing up the historic landmark.

It is the state's most visible public building -- a spectacular combination of art and architecture built 100 years ago for what seems like a bargain now.

"It took $4.5 million to finally build the building," said Paul Mandell of the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board. "It took us $5.5 million to replace the roof in 1995."

After years of neglect the marble dome is leaking, there's peeling paint, falling plaster and outdated mechanical systems.

"The building is not zoned in any way, shape or form," Mandell said. "So, you turn on the heat for the whole building or you turn on the air conditioning for the whole building."

There's growing support for a massive restoration project that will close all or part of the Capitol's entire east wing for up to six years.

The $75 million top-to-bottom renovation could include everything from electrical systems to painstaking historical cleaning.

Years of smoked-filled corridors yellowed the Kasota stone walls. A test cleaning shows a startling difference. Historic hand painted murals that once appeared faded and dull suddenly sparkle.

"All of a sudden you see the corn kernels and the corn hairs and the colors of the leaves as opposed to what looked like some kind of a plant, but you couldn't quite tell what," Mandell said.

Architects hope to bring back the original glass and cage elevators that once looked out on the Capitol Mall, and of which, only one photograph is known to exist.

"The intention was to let light into the elevators and into the halls, instead of this metal screen that we've got now," Mandell said.

It could be the most extensive and expensive facelift the Capitol's ever had, but supporters said it must be done to preserve Minnesota's most visible landmark.

"This is our building -- the public's building," Mandell said.

Numerous other state capitols are also under renovation right now. That includes a $400-million repair job in Louisiana and a $287-million restoration in Texas.
