Father Peter Pomposello holds a decapitated baby Jesus as he talks about the vandalism of the nativity scene outside Saints John and Paul Catholic Church.
"It's not only theft, it's not just vandalism," Father Pomposello says. "It has, really, all the marks of a bias crime."
Baby Jesus is now missing his head, hands and his left toes. The vandals also stole four sheep.
"This is an image of the whole Christmas season," Pomposello said. "As Christians we venerate the baby Jesus this season. This was part of the procession for midnight mass and for the vigil mass on Christmas.
"It's awful. It's just awful," he added.
The church's caretaker discovered the damage and missing lambs this morning when he was adding the three wise men to the display.
"I'm 26 years here and I've never seen that happen, and Im really shocked," Jerry Lopez said.
Baby Jesus will not be laying in his manger until he's repaired or replaced. For now, he'll stay wrapped up in a towel. Late Friday, a parishioner found three of the little lambs a few blocks from the church, but they're also badly damaged.
"To see it destroyed, it really makes me nauseous," Father Pomposello said. "It's really awful."
Police are investigating, while the church is considering enclosing the nativity scene in Plexiglas next year.

Westchester County...where else.
And I won't post my thoughts on this. May get me in troble....I'll just say my first thoughts involve the three S's, and I'll leave it at that....
make that trouble.
Home of LAX
The story doesn't mention that Sts. John & Paul is in Larchmont, which is among the top dozen or so most affluent towns in America. There are plenty of conservatives in Larcmont, but it also the heart of limosine iberal territory.
Who or what is LAX?
Worst type of the people on the face of the earth - including Osama. And yes, I'd say that with or without the Jameson. Osama can't beat us. Limo libs from the inside can.
In my old age, I've learned to tolerate kids being bad kids.
What I hate is that these crimes are not just that anymore - they are not crimes of opportunity, rather purposeful attacks on Christians. Intended to harm, and nothing else.
It's a war.
As I said, this used to be my parish. The nativity figures at SJP were quite valuable. Do you think this would have made more than a local news blurb if this had been a mosque or a temple?
The only LAX I'm familiar with is Los Angeles International Airport, but I don't think that's what he's referring to.
Also used as an abbreviation for lacrosse in this nape of the woods.
The "local news" has yet to figure out the reality -- glaring to you and I -- that the story has made it onto Free Republic, while they become more obsolete every year.
Happy 2006!
I didn't know that.
By "lacross" I mean the sport.
Agreed that if the mainstream media were at all doing their supposed job honestly, websites like FR would be out of business.
in Larchmont?
Not far from me, at all. I'll be over that way tomorrow.
Anger knows no ends.
Make sure to stop by Walter's for the world's best hot dog.
No mention of it being a hate crime. Odd.
