I think that a legitimate third party is going to emerge in the next five years, and will replace (as has always been the case) one of the two majors.

The question is, which one is going away?

If the New Party (which will be called something else, obviously) is McCain, Lieberman, Giuliani, Rice, Miller, with a few leftists thrown in (Harold Ford, etc) then the GOP will go away.

If the new party is openly socialist, the Dems will no longer be necessary.

Who knows?
