TEHRAN, Dec. 31 (MNA) -- Some Iranian non-governmental organizations (NGO) have presented the United Nations Human Rights Commission an unrealistic picture of Iran regarding violence against women, a member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said on Saturday.
Speaking to the Fars News Agency, Elham Aminzadeh stated that the person who planned and arranged the reports for the UN Commission did not act fairly in selecting the NGOs.
The UN Human Rights Commission rapporteur visited Iran to make a report about violence against women from January 29 to February 6, 2005, and visited various institutions, she added.
The report has cited gender inequality, patriarchal beliefs, the view that men are superior to women, sex prejudices, and hard line religious principles as the main reasons for violence against women in Iran, Aminzadeh said.
But some other NGOs which are active in womens affairs and people like Shirin Ebadi (Noble peace prize winner) met the rapporteur and informed him that we did not confirm his report, the lawmaker noted.
The report has mentioned plans by the Judiciary to support womens rights, to establish various offices in support of women, to observe womens legitimate freedoms and citizenship rights and a decree to police by the Judiciary not to put psychological or physical pressure on suspects as the positive measures carried out by the Iranian government in regard to observing human rights, Aminzadeh stated.
In conclusion, she added that the Foreign Ministry and the Judiciary are taking measures to present people inside and outside the country with a true image of the Judiciarys activities which are usually questioned as negative acts.
TEHRAN (Reuters) - The Iranian government on Monday ordered the closure of a daily newspaper and banned a planned women's publication in the first media crackdown since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took office in August.
