Harry Reid Caught in Abramoff Plea Deal?

Harry Reid Caught in Abramoff Plea Deal?

This morning's announcement that Washington super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff has reached a plea bargain deal with the Justice Department has reporters salavating over what they hint is going to be a Republican mega-scandal.

But it turns out that the most prominent player in Abramoff's web of influence was reportedly none other than the Senate's top Democrat, Harry Reid.

In a little noticed story in November, the Associated Press revealed that Reid had accepted tens of thousands of dollars from an Abramoff client, the Coushatta Indian tribe, after interceding with Secretary of the Interior Gail Norton over a casino dispute with a rival tribe.

Reid "sent a letter to Norton on March 5, 2002," reported the AP. "The next day, the Coushattas issued a $5,000 check to Reid's tax-exempt political group, the Searchlight Leadership Fund. A second tribe represented by Abramoff sent an additional $5,000 to Reid's group. Reid ultimately received more than $66,000 in Abramoff-related donations between 2001 and 2004."

Questioned about the donations last month by "Fox News Sunday's" Chris Wallace, Reid immediately turned testy.

"Don't try to say I received money from Abramoff. I've never met the man, don't know anything," he insisted.

When Wallace protested: "But you've received money from [one of his Indian tribe clients]," the top Democrat shot back: "Make sure that all your viewers understand - not a penny from Abramoff. I've been on the Indian Affairs Committee my whole time in the Senate."

A red letter day, indeed. Harry Reid finally admits that he doesn't know Jack.

That's CBS, and no, neither they nor the "Pubbies" in the Senate will ask Dingy Harry the questions.

Who has the "Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do" sound bite, and can we change that to Dingy?

Newsmax may be on the right side in many of the discussions but they tend to exagerate and stretch and skew so that they become an unreliable source.

With Reid on the Indian affairs committee, it's not unusual (although it's still sad) that he would get money from tribes. Maybe that can be linked to Abramoff, who knows.

But for NewsMax to make this statement

"But it turns out that the most prominent player in Abramoff's web of influence was reportedly none other than the Senate's top Democrat, Harry Reid."

calls into question Newsmax's credibility and the whole story, since there are congressmen with known direct ties to Abramoff.

There are Democrats and Republicans who are guilty of taking money from Abranoff.

Which means nobody will be charged, and the whole thing will be kept secret.

In a little noticed story in November, the Associated Press revealed that Reid had accepted tens of thousands of dollars from an Abramoff client

Well, since it was in a story in November, this is officially Old News® and the MSM can safely ignore it.

During the XXX-42 administration, news would be leaked out late Friday afternoon after the press had already hit the bars and by Monday it would be Old News® and thus not worthy of coverage.

Note that Old News® only applies to Democrats. If President Bush had one too many drinks at a frat party in college, that would still be Breaking News® and thus worthy of the front page headline in the New York Times.

He won't be called to the carpet for it, because he is a Democrat. But it will deflate the latest Democrat and MSM attempt to smear the Republicans.

The Democrats and the MSM are like 5 year olds at bat during a "T-Ball" game. The ball is laid out before them on a plastic T, and all they can manage to do is swing and miss. The liberal moms in the stands cheer them on with "Good Job!" but they all know it is pathetic.

I care about the Republicans. Does anyone know if they are involved or could be in trouble? I am worried since the media hates us that they are going to go nuts on this story. I am excited about the November elections because i think we will pick up some seats. Are we safe from this Abramhoff (sp?) SOB character.

Dingy's whole family is sucking from the government Teet. Rush read a story a while back of the shady real estate and lobby deals his kids were involved. He never met Abramov, good, when was the last time he talked to him on the phone. The Indian committee should be renamed the corrupt Indian Casino Committee. All they do is take bribes to create new tribes to get casinos built whereever they can get a way with.

You nailed it. Of course he never met anyone. Access to Reid is via his kids, the "lobbyists". They charge several-hundred-thousand-dollar fees for arranging Reid's votes. He never has to have personal contact with anyone.

There have been many reports of Harry Reid taking money from one source or another. He has also used his position to enrich his family and friends.

The Republicans are to wimpy to do anything about these reports of bribery.

It has DEFINITELY been linked to Abramhoff. Whether Harry is the "most prominent player" or not is another question, but he definitely received $66,000 from Abramoff, through a front group, that's why he could claim he'd never met him. It was an amusing interview. "Don't try to hang that on ME, Chris, this is a REPUBLICAN scandal. Don't try to hang that on me!".

I've wondered from the start how a union thug, mafioso connected type like Abramhoff could be so involved with Republicans. Now I'm starting to see he was paying everybody, not just pubs. The tip of the iceberg is only one percent of what's underneath.

That's because they're all on the take too. I wish something would bust open like the House Checking Account scandal, but about 10X as big that would just blow the lid off that crooked damn teapot dome/Tammany Hall game they've got going up there.

Reid is a logical target for Abramoff given his character and committee assignments but I have not seen linkage established for the tribal donations - they could just be trying to buy influence in general rather passing along money from Abramoff.

I'm not defending Reid - I'm criticizing this article.

Tellingly, NO republican has been specifically mentioned.

IF (my opinion!) ANY significant reppubbie, or even a couple of non-significant repubbies, were really involved, the media would be printing their names in every reoprt and from every channel.

They are NOT mentioning ANY names - which tells me most of the neames are demcorats, or ex-democrats!)

Dasshole, anyone?

Other from ND, South Dakota, OK, NM, McCain (AZ), CO, ....
