I had a friend in high school who was born with 6 fingers on one hand. The sixth finger was removed when he was an infant.I had a similar friend with a sixth finger removed from each hand. I told him he should search the world and marry a six fingered girl and he didn't think that was funny one bit.

I told him he should search the world and marry a six fingered girl... Tough gig - Anne Boleyn is the only one I can think of, and she's been dead for a while now :)

Polydactyly is quite common and the extra digits usually don't have bones. They tie them off and they drop off just like the remnants of the umbilical cord (I'm sure they do it differently now - I feel age creeping up on me)
