WASHINGTON — With the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito less than a week away, his critics are making every effort to whip up opposition to Alito's joining the court.
But ever since the defeat of Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork a little more than 18 years ago, conservative activists have vowed not to let such critics go unanswered.
The Senate Judiciary Committee will begin the confirmation hearing process for Alito, an appeals court judge. Believing that most Americans are now past the diversion of the holidays, several interest groups for and against Alito are now picking up the pace of their public relations campaigns.
"Every day desperate liberals make up a steady drip of attacks against Judge Samuel Alito. Want the truth?" asks the ad from Progress for America, a conservative group.
Progress for America is spending about $500,000 on a television ad that quotes the writings of legal analyst Stuart Taylor, a columnist for The National Journal.

"As you know I chaired the 'Block Bork Coalition' in 1987. In this coalition that's mobilizing is as formidable a coalition as the progressive (communist) community has had since 1987," Neas said. "Of course, this time it's an arch-conservative replacing not another arch-conservative but a mainstream (Liberal) conservative ... Maybe very importantly, is the extensive paper trail. This trail goes back over 20 years, in many ways it's similar to Robert Bork's paper trail in 1987."

That's true.... however Specter put the kabosh to bringing this forward earlier in Nov, primarily to allow the anti-Alito left-wing opponents more time to smear and lie about Alito. If Bush & the Senate Repukes had not supported Specter over Toomey, they would not end up now having to deal with Specter's obstructionism. In fact they could have stopped Specter from being judiciary chairman.... but Specter lied and said he would not undermine Bush's nominees, which in fact he has done ever since. So Bush & his cowardly Senate Repukes have no ones to blame but themselves for the delay of 2 months. Apparently judiciary committee staffers have been idly wasting time for the past 2 months with very little to do up until now.

The campaign against Alito resembles a bunch of tenderfoot Boy Scouts trying to start a fire in a downpour by rubbing two smooth wet sticks together. Lots of motion, but little heat and no spark. Nevertheless, we need to keep making sure the powder for our guns is still dry.
