Blanco orders remodeling just after storms Office tab: $564,838

Some members of the governor's staff will return from the three-day holiday on Tuesday to newly renovated offices at the State Capitol. Shortly after the two hurricanes, Gov. Kathleen Blanco decided to renovate some of her staff's offices. At the time of her decision, Blanco also was hinting at deep budget cuts to state programs and the possibility of laying off 20 percent of the state workforce.

The project cost $564,838.

The newly refurbished office space on the sixth floor of the State Capitol includes hookups and mounts for two flat screen televisions, Swedish granite countertops, walnut paneling and frosted laminated glass. The floor, which will not be accessible to the public, was redesigned to add three new offices, a conference room and file storage areas. The week before work began, Blanco ordered a spending and hiring freeze to rein in state government expenses.

"includes hookups and mounts for two flat screen televisions, Swedish granite countertops, walnut paneling and frosted laminated glass."

and remember, the upgrades were to make the building comply to the safety code. After all, walnut paneling is essential to proper safety. As is frosted glass.

Give her a break ..after all the mayor was out of town, flew the coop, sorta speak, and unavailable for conference on this matter. As soon as the Hurricane struck the mayor ran to Texas where he bought a new home and enrolled his kids in school.

Now we can understand why she was so unavailabe for her people - bigger things were on her mind.

Can understand now why she was so angry and blaming The President for not caring for her people and not ordering Mayor C. Ray Nagin to get those buses on the road. Between getting her talking orders from hillary and Mary Landrieu and blaming The President she was a very busy lady.

A cruel message to LA citizens

It would seem that at a time when LA most needs to convince Congress that it will not misuse the funds being sent for rebuilding, our governor would be more careful about her decisions that might send the wrong signal. Even more so it would seem that she would be more concerned about not acting like Marie Antoinette while her subjects are in such dire straits.

Not so.

The latest “let them eat cake” message to her subjects from our governor was the renovation of the governor’s offices in the Capitol. See story here.

It is alleged that the state was afraid of being sued for not going forward with the renovations planned pre-Katrina. BULL-S__T! One doesn’t have to be an expert in contracts law to know that nobody can force the state of LA to spend money. Even if there was a judge somewhere who would, it is a bitter message to the citizens of LA about our government’s priorities. How about some more debris removal equipment?

The renovations

[H]ookups and mounts for two flat screen televisions, Swedish granite countertops, walnut paneling and frosted laminated glass. The floor, which will not be accessible to the public, was redesigned to add three new offices, a conference room and file storage areas. The Advocate, December 31, 2005

Compare and contrast

1. Contractors? Many of us can’t find anyone even if we had the money to pay them to even tear out the water-soaked remnants of our homes.

2. Flat screen televisions hookups and mounts? In the middle of the biggest disaster to ever hit America, what is the need for televisions in state offices?

3. Granite counter tops? Many of us don’t even have counters on which to put tops, much less granite ones.

4. Walnut paneling? Many of us have no walls on which to put paneling. Many of our walls are nothing, but bare 2×4s. How about just some dry sheetrock?

5. New offices? Many of us have no offices at all, much less ones with a conference room.

6. File storage areas? I wonder if the governor’s staff has experienced trying to rent a mini-storage facility in South LA to store the remains of their possessions?

In terms of government waste $564,838 may be small potatoes. But the message being sent to the hundreds of thousands LA citizens with no jobs, no homes and struggling to survive is a cruel one. Where is the governor’s compassion?

C.B.

Though the meat of the article was right they should have cut the brief jab at the beginning because technically she decided to do it before the hurricane then decided to go through with it afterwards. Blanco defenders are sure to nitpick a trite issue like that.

The key message here is Blanco went through with a half a million upgrade that she didn't need after Katrina.

' That's why, for years now, I've been encouraging rational people of good will to just ignore stupid laws. '

It's interesting you should mention that. I was thinking about how laws and gov't falter just yesterday and ultimately I think what happens is when the gov't becomes "law-happy" and creates laws the common people ignore a community-gov't schizm occurs. People just simply ignore the laws they feel to be stupid, lose respect for authority, and non-gov't leaders begin to take over.

In a way it's what happened with the American Revolution and the break-up of the USSR. Flouting the Crown/Premier became common place. The people though do desire for a gov't to exist which leads to revolution.

Eventually either the gov't adopts reform or they get overthrown by people trying to codify a new order.

The remodeling was done by the Blan Co. They are a noted Louisiana remodeling co which participates in the no bid process, (did I say no bid???)

Cousin Bada Blanco was the lowest bada bid co!!

In the middle of the biggest disaster to ever hit America, what is the need for televisions in state offices?

Why, to watch Gov.Blanko in her many TV appearances ... she was even on Larry King live ... and sought cameras at every turn ...

Revolting display of arrogance and self absorbtion.

The floor, which will not be accessible to the public...

If the government (state or fed) has any balls, it will find a way to mandate the "private" areas to become public and open to tours.

I bet the same people who advised her what to wear during a crisis also advised her how to decorate.
