PHARR -- The wife of a state representative filed Monday to run against her husband in a South Texas race that both candidates said coincides with an impending divorce.
Democratic state Rep. Armando "Mando" Martinez, a 13-year incumbent from Weslaco, faces a primary challenge from his wife, Jessica Reyes-Martinez. The District 39 seat covers part of Hidalgo County.
Reyes-Martinez, 28, filed as a candidate in the March 7 primary only 30 minutes before the Monday deadline, The Monitor reported in its Tuesday edition. She's making her first bid for public office and is now a homemaker.
"I'm actually running for office, not against him," Reyes-Martinez told the McAllen newspaper. "It just happens he's in office right now."
The two live in separate houses in Weslaco, and did not speak with one another after making short speeches at the Hidalgo County Democratic Party kick-off on Monday night.
Martinez is a 29-year-old firefighter and paramedic. When asked if the race is personal, he said that's for voters to decide.
"Everyone is free to run," he said.
Hidalgo County's Democratic Chairman Juan Maldonado said it's a surprise that the race is now contested, but anything is possible in Hidalgo County politics.
There are no Republican candidates.
Family meals must be tense in that household.
No good stuff for him I bet.
>>>Family meals must be tense in that household.<<<
Probably not - from the article: "The two live in separate houses in Weslaco..."
Somehow, that seems strangely appropriate!
Politics getting personal, indeed!
Texas motto: "If you can't drink their likker, take their money, screw their women, and still vote against them, you don't belong in politics."
Having a woman representative would save those Texans a lot of money because theyd only have to pay her half as much. Right?
I'm from down there. Just had to mark this for later.
I know a Republican, who has won election to the County Commission and to the State House, who after his divorce received campaign contributions from his ex.
I guess Republicans handle their marital differences better than Dems do.
Oh, so cynical, LOL. No, neither the salary for County Commission nor for State House are enough to significantly affect one's ability to pay alimony.
Politics is bad enough when it's a naked grab for money and power. Throw in divorce proceedings and you've taken things way beyond the pale of decency.
