Abramoff, clients gave thousands to California officials

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff or Indian tribes he once represented donated tens of thousands of dollars to members of Congress from California, and some returned the money or will donate it to charity, officials said.

The California list was headed by House Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo, R-Tracy, whose political committees received $54,500 from Abramoff or the tribes, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan watchdog group that analyzed political contributions from 1999 to 2005.

The largest donation to Pombo, $10,000, came from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, the report said.

He was followed by Rep. John T. Doolittle, R-Rocklin, whose political committees banked $50,000, the center said. Four other state representatives received $10,000 or more from Abramoff or tribes he had represented.

As Abramoff pleaded guilty to a second set of felony charges in as many days, this time in Florida, numerous congressional Republicans as well as President Bush shed campaign donations linked to the once-powerful lobbyist.

Two political committees for Rep. Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, received $21,500 from tribes represented by Abramoff, but no donations from the lobbyist directly. Those tribes included the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, the report said.

You know, it might just be easier to make a list of those who DIDN'T get money from Abramoff. Who isn't corrupt? Step right up!

If this is true, don't you think this will be difficult to hide from the American people? Even the MSM can't hide this information.

They can't hide it... but it doesn't mean they have to report it. Hell... the Republicans don't seem to care if they take the blame for the whole mess!

Haven't followed this all that close but it seems that Abramhoff also got the tribes to donate to candidates. Is there a breakout of tribal money donated to currest and past campaigns? Would love to see just who his clients were as I have a bad feeling this is tied to approval of tribal gambling where the tribes are making millions and leaders are using some of that money to buy more influence.

IMHO this is the tip of the iceberg and until we elect ethical office holders it will continue. Instead of CFR, this Country would have been much better off limiting lobbying efforts and making Ethics of our elected officials a #1 priority.

Here in the Oklahoma in the 2004 Senate race, the Cherokees worked for the Democrat Carson campaign as federal employees during business hours -- official complaint was filed but as far as I know nothing has been done.

Think it would be interesting to see what tribes this lowlife lobbied for as I would bet this is a much larger scandal then is already being discussed. From rumors I have heard this affected potential candidates for our Governorship.

I hope you are right about these names. My US House of Representative is Christopher Smith (R, NJ). I did not notice his name. I will assume that he is clean on this one.

"Baca, Boxer, Becerra, Cardoza, Costa, Davis, Dooley, Farr, Feinstein, Lee, Miller, Napilatino, Pelosi, Sanchez, Schiff, Sherman Stark, Tauscher, Thompson, Waters, Waxman"

That makes 18 US House members and two US Senators. What a bunch of hypocrites and losers.

Poor Indians! victims again! Here they were trying to get Jack Abramoff to bribe Congressmen to get political favors they could not otherwise get, and they were cheated.

Sorry, I can't work up an sympathy for Indian bribers who were outwitted by a wily white trader.
