If you want to read a book about the life of a child in the Soviet Union during WWII then you might consider, "The Painted Bird" by Jerzey Kosinski. I've heard that Kosinski has been exposed as a complete liar and the Painted Bird is fiction. If you look him up on wikipedia they have the details. He was a good actor in Reds.

Read the book and then ask yourself, what kind of mind could have made this stuff up. Again, if it's fiction, just what experiences in life could have shaped this imagination? You've never read anything even remotely like it.

Maybe it was mom who was also leaving the gas valve open and who pushed him into the river as a child. Poor guy. I hope he wins the big screen television.

""What *war* does to humans and families..." Really? Were moms sticking needles into American babies' heads during WWI or WWII?

No, nor was America being invaded by the Wehrmacht and having its citizens slaughtered by the SS following closely behind. America's sovereignty hasn't been threatened by a foreign military since the War of 1812.

Kosinki was proven to be a liar and fraud on many levels.
That is the kind of mind that writes books like his.

"The Painted Bird, ostensibly semi-autobiographical, was demonstrated to be a work of fiction: rather than wandering the Polish countryside, Kosin´ski had spent the war years in hiding with a Polish Catholic family and had never been appreciably mistreated. Kosin´ski defended himself by arguing that he had never maintained that the book was based on true events." -
