Read this quote from the article:
"Gingrich was one of the primary architects of the GOP takeover of Congress in 1994, when Republicans swept into office in part by promising to rid Capitol Hill of Democratic corruption. Bush first campaigned for the White House as an outsider, too, promising to restore honor and integrity to the office, though he himself was ultimately ousted in part over an ethics scandal."

Thanks. Gravity's Rainbow is a very great novel. BTW, School of Rock was a pretty good movie, too. :-)
But Gingrich wasn't ousted. He simply retired. There is no evidence he was going to lose his next election, and ultimately he only had one ethics "violation", for which he paid a fine but was not censured -- the "violation" being supposedly using his teaching position to espouse republican principles.
But Gingrich wasn't ousted either.
Right. He was not ousted, he resigned. And he did so not because of ethics problems, but because as house leader he took responsibility for the loss of seats in the house.
it was meant to be Gingrich and somebody (either by mistake or intentionally) put Bush instead.
He quit BEFORE livingston, that is why livingston was the speaker-elect, because Gingrich had already stepped down as speaker -- not because of an affair, but because of the losses in the house, which were in part blamed on Gingrich. And that was NOT because of ethics, but simply because of the negative image of him starting with the government shutdown, and then the impeachment proceedings.
Why don't they just stamp their message on their foreheads?
They are that obvious...
[sigh] I've already addressed that. I didn't say Gingrich was ousted. The writer did-- or meant to, but mangled the sentence.
And Gingrich didn't run for office on ethics stuff either, having run years before the 1994 victory.
BTW, the media is so bad that we can't all even get down all the different problems here. He didn't run for the white house, he didn't get ousted for ethics problems.
And all these big mistakes hide the other biases. For example, the media always calls the 1994 election a "takeover". It wasn't a "takeover", it was an election victory.
Very good comment. Here's a prediction to test your assertion. If the Democrats win a majority of the House in the coming election [let's hope not!], then "rhetorical symmetry" would indicate that the MSM should say "Democrats Retake House". I hereby predict that they will prefer "Democrats Regain House".
Ah yes. Well I might prefer Johnny Black on the rocks or a nice Guinness when I'm re-reading passages from GR, but Jack Black is good too!
By the way, there is a new book that bears some similarity to Gravity's Rainbow and is an interesting read: Europe Central by William T. Vollmann.
"it was meant to be Gingrich and somebody (either by mistake or intentionally) put Bush instead."
Bingo.
Of course you are absolutely correct.
Thanks. Gravity's Rainbow was a favorite book of mine in high school. One of these days I'll reread it. "V" was great too and so was "The Crying of Lot 49". In fact "49" might be the best of all of them. I tried to read "Vineland" shortly after it was published and it did nothing for me. I never finished it. How odd. Times change, tastes change, authors change.
Did they mean Livingston, former congressman from LA?
Welcome, friend.
You're right about the timing, I should have known better. I still think the rest was "known" in certain circles. They also went after Henry Hyde for an affair that occurred 25 years earlier. Heck, they even went after Thomas Jefferson in order to make Clinton appear as if "everone was doing it."

Thanks. I appreciate the welcome.
