The 911 tape, released Wednesday by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, is the first official indication that Dungy died by hanging. The Sheriff's Office is awaiting the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's report for a final determination on the cause of Dungy's death.

This horrible story just keeps getting worse.

Whatever happened to respect for a family's privacy in a situation like this? Does the public really need to know?

I wouldn't shoot the messenger (you), but our culture has gotten vulgar.
Why do I need to know the details of this family's tragedy? Why are the families of those coal miners being interviewed on TV? "How do you feel, reading that note that he wrote as he died in the tunnel, please face the camera while you answer"
We're a society of voyeurs.

No, I'm not shooting the messenger. Just deeply saddened that the media has so little respect for a family's grief and heartbreak. If you were in the Dungy family, how would you feel?

I completely agree with your comments. I see the same stick the camera in your face with my local news. I've always thought that - God forbid - I ever have a tragedy where they show up on my doorstep I would loudly tell them what they could do with the camera and to themselves.

I don't think this is a particularly unusual way for men to kill themselves. It still is a tragedy and very hurtful to the family.

>She told the dispatcher
she found Dungy hanging by a leather belt and used a knife to cut him down .... The nearly five-minute tape also reveals that
Dungy's roommate was in the apartment in another room, unaware of what had happened.

This guy would at once suspect the roommate and girl did in Dungy's son . . .

What I found interesting is that he OD'd earlier, and called his mother. I wonder if he received phychological help - his poor parents must be agonizing.

If you were in the Dungy family, how would you feel? I agree with your take on their privacy. I only hope, that when they're doing press conferences after Indy playoff wins, that some idiot reporter doesn't ask a question of Coach Dungy, that makes a reference to his son.

You've got that right. Local News is the worst. If I see one more news program here in AZ devoted to the family of some kid who drowned in a pool, I'm going to scream. I mean, yes..it's a tragedy...and my heart goes out to the family...but how much do we really need to know? Do I need to hear EVERY relative interviewed? Every expert tell me that children shouldn't go near pools...duuhhhh...

I can't imagine
the grief his parents must feel.
And just think about
the fear they must feel
thinking of their other kids.
That would scare me most.

Wasn't the movie "Broadcast News", where it was wildly mentioned "If it bleeds, it leads"?
Same reason all the news shows continue to pump BAD news out to the masses.
I read some papers from 100 (or so) years ago, and they were stuff like "The Farmer family raised their barn", " The Smith family on Liberty Road is going to have a bake sale", etc. There was very little of the "The Small family died in a house fire" kind of stuff. Makes me wonder when it all started
