Leaving the scene of an accident, DUI, manslaughter, obstruction of justice, perjury and treason. And the morons in Massachusetts keep sending Kennedy back to the Senate, so he can "judge judges". I wonder if they teach this stuff in high school civics class.

I assert Kennedy is a murderer, drunken womanizer and an elitist who looks down on people of color through his racist social programs.

We are all of us democratic in our inclinations.

I think you are confusing the principle differences between a Republic and a Democracy. America is a Republic, not a Democracy.

re·pub·lic (r-pblk) n.
A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president.
A nation that has such a political order.
A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them.
A nation that has such a political order often Republic
A specific republican government of a nation: the Fourth Republic of France.
An autonomous or partially autonomous political and territorial unit belonging to a sovereign federation.
A group of people working as equals in the same sphere or field: the republic of letters.

de·moc·ra·cy (d-mkr-s) n. pl. de·moc·ra·cies
Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
A political or social unit that has such a government.
The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.
Majority rule.
The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community

Much more information on the differences can be found here courtesy of the US Army. Essentially a Democracy is a socialist form of gov't. There is a superb analysis given here:

A Democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of Government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that Democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a Dictatorship.(Written by Professor Alexander Fraser Tytler, nearly two centuries ago while our thirteen original states were still colonies of Great Britain. At the time he was writing of the decline and fall of the Athenian Republic over two thousand years before.

The next time Kennedy mispronounces "Alito", the judge should call him Mr. "Carmody".

"...And I think Ted Kennedy is a lying, treasonous, philandering old sot who may also be a murderer. Just my personal opinion of the low-life, mind you...."

Oh, man, why do you insist on holding back. Let fly. Tell us all just exactly how you feel about The Swimmer.

I haven't had time to go to the link, and I think that we fundamentally agree. To me, the principal difference between a Republic and a Democracy is that a Republic is committed to preserving the rights of a minority. A Democracy is, clearly, not. Jesus and Socrates were killed democratically. In your country, to which I already pledge my allegiance without the benefit of yet being a citizen, I am a minority. I am a non-white woman. So the difference is significant.

What irritates me is that nobody considers the derivation of the term Republican, and when sanctimonious ****** like Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi et al call themselves DemocratIC, the implication is that Americans are:
a. oppressed by a small group of wealthy white men.
b. desirous of change (hence that highly irritating song by Tracy Chapman Talking 'bout a revolution)

and that we who are not Democrats have no democratic inclinations. That is not the case. If I am going to go out some night with you, my fellow FReepers, I will go wherever most of you want to go. It is my democratic impulse. I'm not doing the best job of articulating my position, but I hope that you understand that I'm not giving them a pass on this. If nothing else, I will penalize their shoddy use of the language.
