THP officials plan fake punishment for trooper in ticket-fixing scheme

NASHVILLE, Tenn. A published report in Nashville says top officials of the Tennessee Highway Patrol planned a phony punishment for a trooper who fixed a speeding ticket for Deputy Governor Dave Cooley. The report by The Tennessean newspaper came from notes describing a meeting between the highway patrol's then-commander Lynn Pitts and Safety Commissioner Fred Phillips.

The notes were taken by Lieutenant Colonel Larry Rucker, then the Number Two man in the highway patrol. The Tennessean reported that it obtained the notes from a confidential source.

The notes say Pitts planned to reassign Lt. Ronnie Shirley from Rutherford County to Wilson County so -- as the notes state -- "the media will be satisfied thinking we did something to him."

But the notes say the reassignment would be only "on paper" and that Shirley already lives in Wilson County -- just east of Nashville in the town of Mt. Juliet.

In the end, Shirley was reprimanded for his involvement in the ticket dismissal and he was transferred to Davidson County.

So whats the big deal with a trooper fixing a ticket?

And why should the trooper be in trouble?

Seems like a stupid article to me.

Lucky for all involved that the Governor of Tennessee is a Democrat. Otherwise this would be on the NYT front page with big (R)'s next to the applicable names.

There's been more than a little trouble centering on the THP in recent months. Some even appear to have criminal backgrounds which would disqualify them from buying a firearm. I guess their buddies in government got around that little problem by just giving them guns - and cars to go with them. No, when there are dirty cops it makes it bad for everyone, especially for the ones that aren't crooked. Of course, it starts with the legislature, but, don't worry, they're hard at work on new "ethics" rules.
