I would argue that they are very similar...except, the Communist Party is worse in terms of its negative effects on the individual and society.
1. The mob doesn't control all of society.
2. The communist party doesn't have you kill people to get it.
3. The communist party didn't require you kill people, or give any material support to remain a member.
4. The communist party didn't kill you should you fail to provide that material support.
