Pat Robertson Sings the Blues

I know a lot of dumb people whove said a lot of dumb things. In fact, I am one of those people. Ive said that only-children tend to be spoiled in front of people who didnt have brothers and sisters. Ive made fun of people without college educations in front of people who it turned out never went to college. I regularly make a complete and total ass out of myself. I should probably find a way to get paid for it at this point; I do it so often, its like a part-time job. But for all the dumb things Ive said in my lifetime, and for all the times Ive been told by dear friends that they cant take [me] anywhere, if nothing else, I can take solace in one thing: Im not Pat Robertson. And as much as Ill undoubtedly try, I will probably never say as many dumb things as he does.
Last week, when Israeli PM Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke and underwent hours upon hours of brain surgery, Pat Robertson used the occasion on his show, The 700 Club, to note that Sharon was probably being punished by God for giving land to Palestinians. Now, forget about where you stand on Middle East issues for a minute. That stuff is secondary here. Right off the bat, regardless of where you stand, what makes Robertson so sure Sharons stroke is punishment for anything? I mean, how old is this Sharon guy? Isnt he pushing 80 already? People his age have strokes all the time. Dick Clark, for example. You mean to tell me Dick Clarks stroke was punishment for something? Like what? Did he rock a little too hard at all those New Years Rockin Eves?

Makes sense to me. Read the Bible, anyone?

Pat Robertson whip's the lama's ass. I respect anyone that has the cojones to say what everyone else is thinking (or should be thinking...).

What PR said wasn't half as bad as the media makes it look like.
This topic has been thoroughly beaten to death.

What, like Robinson's agreeing with the statement that America brought 9/11 on herself?

Furthermore, the idea that God may punish people for dividing the land of Israel isn't some pipe dream that Pat Robertson came up with. It's in the Bible, after all. Don't get po'd at PR for being the messenger. If you don't like what the Bible says about dividing the land of Israel, then take it up with Him.

Great, fun read. Thanks for posting this.
For someone who isn't God Pat Robertson sure seems to know not only what's on His mind, but His motives, too.
He should stick with reading his bible, prayer ... and keeping his stupid opinions to himself.

And God was attacking America on 9/11 because of gays?

Well, in certain respects, we did. Remember that sack of crap named Bill Clinton who was elected TWICE, who allowed UBL build up the network of agents and assets that came to make September 11th a day of terror? Remember the Gorelick Wall that impeded intell because Clinton was affraid that shared information would implicate his dealing with the Chinese?
I DO believe that WJC was a judgment from God, that WE got what we wanted and that was a self absorbed womanizer for a President, because WE were willing to go with an immoral sociopath who smiled nicely and sounded good.
As to whether or not God struck Sharron down, we will have to wait for the answer to that one on the "other side".

Earlier,Israel had agreed to donate land to Robertson to develop a Christian tourist attraction. If I were to believe in the kind of God that Robertson does, I'd at least consider the possibility that God might be sending a message about dealing with the likes of Robertson. Because of his foolish and offensive remarks, Israel has cancelled its deal with Robertson. If Sharon recovers now, I will need to reconsider my own religious beliefs.

Wow.
I lost friends on 9/11. Good men, all. Family men, with sons and daughters and wives and parents that will never be the same.
I cannot believe that God had innocent men killed to punish America over some electoral results.

Yeah, really.
When the liberal DUmmies try to blame America for stuff like that, we call them "terrorist-supporting jackass non-patriots".
When Pat Robertson blames America for stuff like that, some people here say "Yeah - HE'S RIGHT!!!"
Both parties are ignorant jackasses.

A. "WE" weren't all willing Clintax supporters.
B. If this is true, than God is tardy, as 9-11 occurred on Bush's watch. By your reasoning, "WE" got what "WE" deserved for electing Bush. That, or God is a fashionably-late God.
C. By your reasoning, the people of Texas got what they deserved with Hurricane Rita, since Bush is from Texas and his foreign policies have gotten lots of people killed.
D. By your reasoning, 'Katrina' was certainly retribution for New Orleans' perverse, drunken behavior. Of course, Las Vegas is still standing last I checked...
E. By your reasoning, the Muslim imams who say the same sort of Godly nonsense must be right.
F. I believe none of the tripe typed above, except "A".

I think Robertson's age is the culprit that makes him say so many outrageous things. He'd like the daffy old uncle you hide in the back room when company comes to call.
Why anyone should pay any attention to him is beyond me. He's not a religious prophet, merely an aging pastor and failed politician who doesn't have the grace to retire from public life.

I haven't followed Robertson's career - was he able to keep from saying incredibly stupid things in his youth and middle-age?

I can't wait to hear what Pat will say when Dick Cheney has a heart attack. And perhaps we should ask him if he thinks Condi Rice's fibroids were a little warning from God.

You may believe what you choose.
But I reserve the right to say that blaming America for 9/11 is abhorrent. America-hating is offensive.
It's also silly - God was punishing America for electing Bill Clinton? After we had already elected George W Bush? That doesn't make any sense at all.

"If you don't like what the Bible says about dividing the land of Israel, then take it up with Him."
I would, but it appears he either does not exist, or else is quite intent on letting the universe run according to the principles established at time of the big bang.
As far as taking it up with whoever wrote that mash of Canaanite, Babylonian, and Egyptian authoritarianism, whoever it was it too long dead to speak to. Might as well start taking things up with the authors of the Popul-Vuh.
Real issue is that there is a lot of people fighting over a tiny area, one side a relatively sane, modern power, willing to negotiate if the other side would stick to its word, and the other side poor and authoritarian-religion-crazed whose leaders keep making bloody undercutting decisions that only work to delay the creation of any sort of workable peace. Robertson's primitive ancient tribal gibberish is no more helpful or morally right than the primitive bloodthirsty tribal gibberish of the other side.
Reminds me of a friend whose relative was researching their family genealogy. One ancestor was a farmer out West, marauding pack of Mormons took his land forcibly on the claim that god gave it to them. If you're really going to start pushing policy on the claims that tribes make about gods giving them land, you're just as much to blame for the continued bloodshed as anyone.
As far as Sharon in particular, unless some magical supernatural thing was force feeding him sugary fatty snacks for the past ten years , I'll go with obesity, stress, and old age as to the source of his stroke, rather than the supernatural.

Read Matthew 22:15 et seq and you will understand why I don't support Bush's war in Iraq, Governmnent involvement in regulating abortion beyond the women's health issues, Government support of religious schools by teaching of ID (creationism), or by Government vouchers weakening support available to public schools. Basically, I am a balnced budget, small Government conservative upset at the Bush's administration's hypocritical pandering of Christian religionists.
15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

Everything that happens is God's will. And I do believe that what America and the American people have become in the past 60 years is deserving of God's wrath. I don't necessarily agree with Robertson's sureness of his hypothesis, but I definitely think it's a valid one. If anything, it's this "sureness" that taints Robertson, not the substance of what he has said.
