Biden criticizes Princeton
Amid CAP showdown, senator says he 'wasn't a big Princeton fan'

Mark Stefanski
Princetonian Staff Writer

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The conservative alumni group Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP) has been the subject of criticism in recent weeks, but yesterday the University itself also came under scrutiny.

Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.), who grilled Samuel Alito '72 about his CAP membership, also said that he "wasn't a big Princeton fan."

"I didn't even like Princeton," he said, to laughter from the gallery. "I mean, I really didn't like Princeton. I was an Irish Catholic kid who thought it had not changed like you concluded it had," referring to Alito's earlier statement that Princeton had changed its traditional ways before he enrolled.

But Biden had nothing but praise for the University in a 2004 speech at the Wilson School.

"It's an honor to be here," he told the audience. "It would have been an even greater honor to have come here."

Biden also said yesterday: "One of my real dilemmas is I have two kids who went to Ivy League schools. I'm not sure my Grandfather Finnegan will ever forgive me for allowing that to happen."

But in his speech at Princeton, he said, "I have three children who have mercifully all finally completed undergraduate and graduate school. And I tried to get all three of them to apply here."

He went on to recall how he tried to convince them to attend Princeton, but because they didn't, he's "counting on his grandchildren."

He was probably giving someone else's speech again.

Because he probably didn't write this speech. He plagiarized it from someone......

So, Biden suffers from Irish Amnesia? Yeah. He forgets everything but his grudges.

Biden is so very full of unresisting imbecility that it is actually painful to read transcripts of some of his remarks.

God, what a putz.

Reminds me of the joke:

"How do you know when a lawyer is lying?"

Ans: His lips are moving.

Well Biden is probably a lawyer and even if he isn't the saying applies equally to politicians from the liberal side.

I think it is fair to say Biden would barely qualify to be a janitor at Princeton.

When Princeton invited a jerk like Biden to speak at their Wilson School of Government, they got what they deserved.

A university that would give an endowed chair to someone like Peter Singer, the advocate of baby murder and bestiality, deserves nothing but contempt.

Like he wouldn't have jumped at an opportunity to attend Princeton! University of Delaware and Syracuse U. are good schools, but his sour grapes attitude is unbearable. Copy this Bidy Boy!

Brags about Ivy League schools to the elite. Pretends to be embarrassed in front of the "common man" voters. UGH

Hugh Hewitt played audio clips from both speeches yesterday.

Biden is a total Democratic Hack! How anyone can take this conceited hypocrite seriously is beyond me.

If I'm a Princeton alumni, I'm furious over his comments yesterday.

Biden is a plagiarist idiot, but his main remark was about Princeton when Alito went there--decades ago, not today (when he gave his speech).

Well, if Biden should be characterized on how he views Princeton today versus decades ago, perhaps he ought not characterize Alito on an organization he was a member of decades ago.

I may have been a Girl Scout decades ago, but that doesn't mean I would want to be a part of them now. They have changed so much. Not always for the better.

During the hearings today Biden revised and extended his remarks by donning a Princeton ballcap and saying he likes Princeton, and his daughter attends Princeton.

But you have it reversed. Biden thinks Princeton (the Girl Scouts in your analogy) is okay today, but not in the 70s and earlier. Biden wants to judge Alito based not on how the Girl Scouts are today, but on how they were when he was a member (so to speak).

Biden has made two sets of comments, each very distinct-- the nature of Princeton decades ago and the nature of Princeton more recently. Those statements can't be in conflict since they aren't about the same thing at all. He's not judging Alito on comments, either, but a membership.
