While we are focused on Iran, what are China and Russia up too in Asia?

This would be a really good time for the Students to rise up and start breaking things. I hate to sound cold, but they can face the Mullahs or they can face us and the Israelis. Their choice.

We're not going to physically invade Iran. You can take that to the bank.

Infinitely harder problem than Iraq, both in terms of size of population, numbers likely to resist, and terrain and distance needed to be covered.

People should not assume that people in Iran that are opposed to the Mullocracy there, are also opposed to Iran having nuclear weapons.

Yawn. The UN Security Council is a joke. What are they going to do, issue sanctions and edicts and then not enforce them?

Hmmm...might there be an Iraqi bombing mission about to 'stray off course' into Iran....?

And we can call it a War Drone Malfunction?

no..?

Our military is one million strong. We have 150,000 in Iraq at the moment.

people seem to keep forgetting that little fact, don't they? They act as if ALL our military is in Iraq.

Iran is screwed. The UN is going to clobber them with a really, really harsh letter.

The letter will threaten to convene a meeting.

I imagine they are opposed to Shock & Awe being performed on their heads.

Germany did a prisoner exchange of a PFLP terrorist for a German held hostage in Iraq last month. The PFLP terrorist was flown to Beirut whereupon he promptly fled south to Hezbollah controlled Southern Lebanon (a nearly autonomous part of Lebanon).

The problem for Iran is that this prisoner exchange was so badly handled that it exposed Hezbollah's massive involvement in the Iraq insurgency. Hezbollah, of course, is funded by Iran.

Iran is already reeling from the geopolitical power-shift in the region when the U.S. and France forced Syria to withdraw its army from Lebanon. That Syrian Army had previously given some large measure of cover against an Israeli re-occupation of Southern Lebanon...Hezbollah's stomping grounds. Now it's gone.

With Hezbollah now vulnerable in Southern Lebanon (Beirut itself could even lead the charge against it, obviously supported by nearby U.S. forces), Iran is currently scrambling to save Hezbollah from U.S. or Israeli destruction.

This is why Iran is being so overt about breaking the UN seals on the 64 uranium centrifuges at one of the few UN-monitored nuclear sites in Persia. This is why Iran's President is talking about wiping out Israel.

Iran, you see, *needs* to create a regional crisis so large that world opinion and/or logistics would make a military move against Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon seem overly and unacceptably provocative.

Oh sure, Iran would love to have a vast supply of nuclear weapons, but that's not what this current geopolitical exercise is about.

This is a manufactured "crisis."

Iran wants the whole world negotiating and walking on eggshells (treading lightly in the region) about their Persian WMD program to such an extent that no rational person would approve a military move against Hezbollah in nearby Lebanon.

After all, you don't go starting a new war right during the middle of sensitive nuclear weapons discussions.

And what Iran desperately needs right now is to insure that there is no massive U.S. or Israeli move against the now-undefended (by Syria's Army) Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Which is to say, Iran is bluffing.

You heard it here, first.

Could we please just bomb the hell out of Iran's military facilities. I'm tired of hearing this diplomatic nonsense.

Regards, Ivan

I think this is diplomatic cover for just that. I think this because the whimpers of the "loyal opposition" have been nearly non-existant vis-a-vis hitting Iran. Many of the normal political foes are even viewing it as the inevitable move we need to make.

I was listening to NPR briefly last night, and even that leftist broadcasting dunghole was acknowleding the need to flatten Iran's programs. Talk about a shock!

Chin up, Ivan. UNSC is just a hoop, and I don't think this'll be drug out all that long.

I read something else today...it seems the Iranian Def Min.... threatened the Gulf States. Iran is trying to bluff people out of the game.

If Iran doesn't stop developing nukes, the U.N. may be forced to send an angry letter to the times.
