Kennedy belongs to exclusive university club of his own
The Washington Times ^ | January 12, 2006 | Charles Hurt

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy belongs to a social club for Harvard students and alumni that was evicted from campus nearly 20 years ago after refusing to allow female members.

According to the online membership directory of the Owl Club, the Massachusetts Democrat updated his personal information -- including the address of his home that is in his wife's name -- on Sept. 7.

The club has long been reviled on campus as "sexist" and "elitist" and, in 1984, was booted from the university for violating federal anti-discrimination laws, authored by Mr. Kennedy.

Mr. Kennedy has spent much of this week's Senate Judiciary Committee hearings interrogating Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito Jr. for his ties to the Concerned Alumni of Princeton, a group that is critical of admissions quotas but was formed in the early 1970s in opposition to the admission of women.

Judge Alito's "affiliation with an organization that fought the admission of women into Princeton calls into question his appreciation for the need for full equality in this country," Mr. Kennedy said Wednesday.

Mr. Kennedy's spokeswoman, Laura Capps, said there is "absolutely no comparison" between the Owl Club, a social group, and an organized effort to "exclude women from getting an education" at Princeton.

"It's a social club. It's like a fraternity," she said. "He has been fighting to break down barriers for decades."

Ms. Capps said she doesn't know how many minorities are members of the Owl.

But the university views organizationssuch as the Owl -- called "final clubs" -- quite differently from fraternities and sororities, which are considered a form of housing and therefore not coeducational.

I'm not surprised he's an utter hypocrite - we all know that - but I am a bit surprised he's so blatant. Obviously he thinks the MSM aren't ever going to call him on the difference between his words and his actions.

Come to think of it, I'm not surprised at that, either.

"He has been fighting to break down barriers for decades."

Especially the ones separating married men from cocktail waitresses.

Well we know that the club in question is not the Chappaquiddick Swim Club. It's coeducational (or at least was for a short time).

My obligatory Swimmer story:

An acquaintance interned at Teddy's press office while at J-school in Boston.

Female staffers were under strict orders not to get into the elevator alone with Teddy.

Fitting. Wasn't Kennedy thrown out of Harvard, too?

from http://tafkac.org/collegiate/harvard_legends.html

The myth: Sen. Edward Kennedy '54-'56 was required to withdraw for two years after cheating on a Spanish final. He had paid someone to take the test for him, and spent the exam period hanging out in Elsie's -- where he ran into his TF. The truth: It wasn't Elsie's -- Elsie's didn't exist at the time. And Kennedy didn't pay the other party to take the test for him. And he didn't personally run into the TF. Otherwise, the story is right on. Kennedy did get nailed for cheating. The story is told in Burton Hersh's _The Education of Edward Kennedy_. In the spring of 1951, freshman Teddy Kennedy has a Spanish A final to take. One of his football teammates had a roommate who knew the language very well -- they called him "The Master of Spanish." Someone joked that the Master should take Teddy's exam for him. On a whim, the Master agreed. Unfortunately, the Spanish A exam proctor recognized him. Within minutes of the exam's conclusion, Kennedy got a call from Dean of the College Delmar Leighton's office. He was nailed: Immediate suspension, readmission to be considered after at least one year off. Teddy ended up enlisting in the Army during his time off. After 16 months of service, he returned to Harvard in 1953. From that point on, he trod the straight and narrow, and graduated in 1956 with a B average.

I've googled and googled, but I can't find a link to the Owl Club at Harvard. I want to ask a club officer what year it was that the club was fully racially integrated. That is, when did they finally begin to allow blacks to join. I will bet anything that Kennedy was a member while the club was still racially segregated.

WAS? I believe it still is. The way I read the article the membership is "fixed."

"I still want to know why "Teddy Baby" only had 16 months of service..."

Those were my thoughts as well. How does one go about serving only 16 months.

That's another great Kennedy story..... Teddy enlisted for FOUR years but his father flipped out and pulled strings to have the enlistment period curtailed.... at least that's the story that goes around, anyone know if it's been documented? Anecdote says that Joe, Sr. said to his meathead son Teddy "DON'T YOU READ ANYTHING?" (referring to the 4 year enlistment papers Teddy had signed, when daddy did not want Teddy going away from Haaahvahd for 4 years in the Army.

While expelled, Kennedy enlisted in the Army, but mistakenly signed up for four years instead of two. His father, Joseph P. Kennedy, then U.S. Ambassador to England, pulled the necessary strings to have his enlistment shortened to two years, and to ensure that he served in Europe, not Korea, where a war was raging. Kennedy was assigned to Paris, never advanced beyond the rank of Private, and returned to Harvard upon being discharged.

Teddy was admitted to Harvard as a legacy student, rather than for academic achievement. Teddy was fortunate that JFK, RFK, and his father had graduated with distinction. Teddy's claim to fame at Harvard was getting expelled for cheating, in his sophomore year. After getting expelled, he sat around feeling sorry for himself, until he signed up for a four-year hitch in the Army.

His father, Joe (who was the U.S. Ambassador to England) was very upset. He reportedly said, "Don't you ever look at what you're signing?" He then pushed political buttons, and revised the enlistment to two years. It is nice to have Daddy fix your screw ups. In two years of military service, he never got above the rank of private.
