Kennedy forgets to lead by example
Rocky Mountain News ^ | January 13, 2006 | Editorials

Forget Sam Alito's tenuous ties, two decades ago, to the Concerned Alumni of Princeton.

Where's the outrage about Sen. Edward Kennedy's continuing membership in the Owl Club?

Kennedy relentlessly badgered Judge Alito for listing the Princeton group on a job application in 1985, but The Washington Times reported Thursday that the Massachusetts senator remains active with the Owl - one of nine males-only fraternities that in 1984 Harvard "booted from the university for violating federal anti-discrimination laws, authored by Mr. Kennedy."

TheNew York Times examined the records of CAP and found no evidence Alito was an active member.

Yet the Washington paper found that on Sept. 7 Kennedy updated his personal information on the Owl Club's online directory, including his current D.C. address.

Yet another reason no one should give a hoot about Kennedy's bluster.

at least it kept him from getting to the White House as president himself. I think it's not Mary Jo's death that gnaws at him still but the fact that he didn't get to be president because of it.

Why do the people in Massachusetts elect this bloviating pile of refuse? Are they all of similar, replusive mind?

And they look down their noses at the South? Alas, Babylon.

Don't get mad, get happy and have some fun along the way.

From now, until the hour he leaves the Senate, wherever he goes, there could be a contingent of varying size standing nearby chanting: "Whoooo, Whoooo, Whooo....."

and another contingent nearby chanting: "Mary Jo, Mary Jo, Mary Jo, ...."

One of the Irish online bookies (Tradesport.com?) could sell futures on how long he lasts.

Borking the Borker (Porker?) for fun and profit.

IIRC that Life Magazine cover was pre-Chappaquiddick. Kennedy was injured in a plane crash. Thus the back brace.

Where's the outrage about Sen. Edward Kennedy's continuing membership in the Owl Club?

Right between the outrage about Sen. Byrd's KKK membership, and the outrage about Sen. Kerry's membership in the VVAW, which seriously considered assassinating US senators.

Ted Kennedy quizzing Sam Alito about Vanguard mutual funds is like a prostitute demanding to know if a nun has ever thought about having an impure thought.

This is what Greenfield was talking about:

Conservative activists, meanwhile, were eager to point out that Mr. Kennedy was on shaky ground accusing the nominee of associating with people opposed to the inclusion of women in private institutions.

The eight-term senator belonged to an all-male social club — the Owl — at Harvard University.

The Owl refused to admit women until it was forced to do so during the 1980s, according to records kept by the Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper.

This kind of guilt by association, I think, is highly unfair. I'm sure that despite having Senator Kennedy as a member, the Owl club is a fine institution.

Oh don't worry, nobody's likely to notice it. Except a few aging human almanacs. :)

I think that the wording of the article may be a bit misleading. My understanding is that the Owl Club was "forced" to admit women if they wanted to remain affiliated with the University. I believe the club then severed ties with the University rather than admit women and that they remain an all-male club today. The wording of the article could suggest that they admitted women when forced to do so. I don't think that is the case. They would have had to admit women only to remain affiliated with Harvard. They chose not to do so, which says a lot about how "inclusive" they really wanted to be.

To me, the Owl Club isn't as big of a deal as Senator Byrd. For heaven's sake, Kennedy is in the Democratic party with a guy who was a member of the KKK! And he's worried about the viewpoints of Judge Alito's associates???

"That Ted Kennedy was allowed to escape justice when he was clearly guilty of negligent homicide at a minimum and then REWARDED with a life of political royalty in the U.S. Senate says a lot about the people of Massachusetts and liberals in general."

BUMP!

Good Catch.

I read into the story that Kennedy and The Owl Club decided to let in women, not that Teddy and The Owl Club decided to leave Harvard's umbrella so as to continue to prohibit women...

Big Difference.
