AP) INDIO Authorities seized 31 pounds of black-tar heroin in a bust that one official said was so big it looked like something out of a movie.
"In 34 years, I've never seen this large of a heroin seizure," Riverside County Assistant Sheriff John Boyd said after a news conference Thursday.
The seizure on Tuesday followed a seven-month operation in the Coachella Valley involving the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Palm Springs and Indio police departments.
Agents estimated the heroin's street value at $1.3 million. It was enough for 140,000 to 280,000 doses, said Stephen Azzam, a DEA assistant special agent.
A Mexican-based organization produced the drug, Azzam said. He did not identify the group but said it has been operating for more than 10 years in the region 100 miles east of Los Angeles.
"This group is directly responsible for maintaining the flow of this caustic poison to our youth in the Coachella Valley and throughout California," Azzam said.
Three people were arrested and face federal charges. The DEA did not identify them.
Officials said the arrests and the drug seizure will help cripple the trafficking organization.
Agents also seized two full-sized trucks, two sport utility vehicles, about $53,000 in cash and two firearms
Idiots. Why didn't they just use one of tunnels.
Any connection with the tunnel we found which started on the Mexican Custom's property?
They're just smuggling the drugs Americans won't smuggle.
Bushfault
Assuming there are 100,000 heroin addicts in California this is one days supply. How is it going to cripple anything? Heroin is evil but the narc game is a waste of time.
BUILD WALL NOW!
It's time to start eliminating the problem BY WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY
The fence is really going to help. Just like the Maginot Line in WWII.
Any improvement is better that what we have now. At least sections of fence would create choke points that could be policed easier.
The problem with the Maginot line was that you could go around it. It wasn't long enough.
I know, you could argue that the Great Wall of China didn't work either. None of these "walls" work if they are incomplete or poorly manned. But to claim the US can't defend its borders if it decides to doesn't hold water. A wall or fence would make crossing the border illegally a lot harder if it was part of a border defense program.
I have no problem with immigration, but we should be able to vet who comes across.
