University Finds $275,000 in Office

Sunday January 15, 2006 3:17 AM

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Three University of South Florida officials were fired after the school discovered $275,000 in misplaced checks and cash scattered throughout an office.

Nearly half the money at the school's English Language Institute - $133,647 - was in checks up to 10 years old and could not be deposited, said university spokeswoman Michelle Carlyon.

The cash and checks Dec. 21 were found inside desks and underneath books and office machines, among other places, Carlyon said.

Two things struck me about this article...1st...why the heck is it in a UK newspaper??? It isn't like this is a hugh national story!!

2nd...it didn't sound like the school seems too upset, judging from the response.."better training"...sheesh.

You are right. Something odd about this.

Maybe it was a big story right at the holidays and it did not get my attention while a house full of company kept me busy.

Maybe planned that way so as not to hurt the school so much? The story is missing dates and names. Seems fast to move to the firings too. No Union to deal with...or Civil Service ??

Our oldest is a sophomore at the University of Oregon. Like others, we have seen tuition costs soar over the last decade. I'm sure glad these large public schools have sound fiscal management and look after our payments so well.

Probably just the tip of the iceberg. Bet there is a lot more that was deposited in their own accounts.

"Nearly half the money at the school's English Language Institute - $133,647 - was in checks up to 10 years old and could not be deposited,"

So, the other half was cash just lying around the office?

The Guardian is short on info in this article, even so, They have it in Breaking News. (?)

Since the Guardian is a leftist rag, perhaps this article is an effort to take potshots against so-called wealthy Americans who are so rich they don't have to worry about where their money.

Wasn't USF the school that Sami Al-arian taught at?

Sounds like someone hasn't cleaned the office in up to 10 years. Maybe the housekeeping staff should be fired too.

"So, the other half was cash just lying around the office?"

I would assume that the other half was in checks that still could be deposited.

Yup. You're right. My son used to have drill meets there. Don't know what I was thinking about unless it was University of Tampa.
